Third practice for the Russian Grand Prix was brought to an end after 35 minutes following a worrying crash for Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz Jr.
Sainz’s Toro Rosso came to a rest beneath the barriers on the exit of Turn 13, with tyre marks along the wall on the entry to the corner.
Replays showed that Sainz appared to lose control of his STR10 on the approach to braking, striking the outside wall before continuing straight on at speed.
Sainz was taken away on a stretcher but gave the thumbs-up as he was loaded into an awaiting ambulance.
Sainz was taken to the medical centre, after which he was airlifted to a nearby hospital.
An FIA spokesman confirmed that Sainz was conscious and talking.
Nico Rosberg had been fastest in the session prior to the stoppage, ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton.
