Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, has formally opened the process for tyre companies to register an interest in becoming the sole official tyre supplier from 2017, according to the Official F1 website.

Pirelli has supplied tyres since the start of 2011 but its current deal expires at the end of 2016, with the FIA opening the process for the period between 2017 and 2019.

Pirelli has yet to confirm its interest in remaining in the sport though has repeatedly said that it is happy with Formula 1 in its present state.

Pirelli demonstrated 18 inch tyres on a GP2 car on Friday at Monaco, with the company eager to move to tyres with a larger wheel diameter.

Michelin, which last provided tyres alongside Bridgestone until 2006, has also expressed an interest, telling Crash.net that a Formula 1 return is possible.

The French company also displayed 18 inch tyres this week, fitting them to a Formula Renault 3.5 car.
