Hulkenberg arrived in Formula One in 2010 having enjoyed a successful junior campaign, including the GP2 crown in his rookie season. He took some time to get up to speed alongside the experienced Rubens Barrichello but was comfortable across the second half of the year. The high point came in Brazil when he set two times good enough for pole position, achieved on merit, and while he was unable to translate that into a strong race result, he had made his mark on the sport.

He could not match the financial package offered by rivals for 2011 and spent a year on the sidelines with Force India, participating in all but five of the first practice sessions. He was promoted to a race seat for 2012 and put in some strong drives, particularly in the second half of the year, culminating in an eye-catching performance in Brazil. He took advantage of slippery conditions to take the lead and was still in contention for the win when he made a mistake under braking and hit Lewis Hamilton. A spin and a penalty thus dropped him to fifth.

For 2013 he moved to Sauber but the Swiss team struggled early on in the season and Hulkenberg only occasionally troubled the points. The car improved after the summer break which allowed Hulkenberg to qualify in third place in Italy and put in some fine race performances, including fourth in Korea. He finished the year in the top 10 of the championship for the first time and announced a move back to Force India for 2014.
