Chilton enjoyed fleeting success during a career in which he spent the majority of time either in British Formula Three or GP2. After a couple of seasons as a backmarker in GP2, he progressed to championship contention in 2012. He won two feature races and finished in the top four of the title race.

His flirtation with Formula 1 began in 2011 when he tested for Force India, having already enjoyed running time earlier in the year with straight line tests. In 2012 he joined Marussia as the team's test driver and participated in the opening practice session in Abu Dhabi.

For 2013 he was promoted to a race seat and secured a best finish of 14th place in Monaco. Despite regularly playing second fiddle to team-mate Jules Bianchi, he enjoyed the unique achievement of managing to finish every race in his rookie campaign as he propped up the championship table.
