Ricciardo joined Red Bull's young driver programme early on in his junior career and has been nurtured by the Austrian drinks giants for several years. He came close to winning the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2010 but had to settle for second position. He continued in the championship into 2011 but commitments in Formula 1 meant that he was not a title contender.

Red Bull promoted the Australian to Formula 1 in 2011 as he became Toro Rosso's reserve driver, participating in the first eight practice sessions of the season. Red Bull struck a deal that saw Ricciardo make his debut in Formula 1 at the British Grand Prix for backmarkers HRT and he completed the season with a best finish of 18th place.

For 2012 he joined Toro Rosso and the season began brightly when he finished in ninth place at home in Australia, his maiden points in the sport. The STR7 was not a competitive machine and he struggled slightly, but returned to the points in Belgium and eventually ended the year with 10 to his name.

Toro Rosso improved in 2013 and Ricciardo doubled his points tally, which included a fine seventh place in China and Italy. He also frequently excelled in qualifying - especially on circuits with long radius corners - but this ability often left him with a tyre deficit in the race, limiting his points hope.

Mark Webber's retirement opened up a berth at Red Bull and the senior team was sufficiently convinced to promote Ricciardo to drive alongside Sebastian Vettel for 2014. It will be a big test of the Australian's ability.
