2009 world champion Jenson Button set the fastest time as pre-season testing began at a sunny Jerez circuit in Southern Spain.
Button bounced back from an early fuel pick-up failure that left him stranded for much of the morning.
It was a worse day for Mercedes who completed just eleven laps with Nico Rosberg when an electrical fault caused a minor fire, ending their running for the day.
Mark Webber was second in the Red Bull RB9, ahead of Lotus’s Romain Grosjean.
Paul di Resta was fourth, having completed the most laps – 89.
Max Chilton suffered an accident in the afternoon, with the Brit confirming something broke at the back of his Marussia MR02.
