Williams driver Valtteri Bottas says he was pleased to hold off Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel as he claimed his best result of the season at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Vettel had to make an extra stop for a front wing change after running wide at the final corner and emerged from the pits behind Bottas.

The Finn repelled the threat from Vettel across the final stint to take fourth place under the lights at Sakhir.

"There was not so much happening before that but [it was] nice to have some action in the end. It was really good to keep him behind as they have a quicker car and he was closing so quickly in the mirrors, I know a few tricks [where] you can defend and that worked."

Team-mate Felipe Massa had to start from the pit lane after his car wouldn't start on the formation lap.

Massa was hit by Pastor Maldonado during the first stint and brought his damaged car home in 10th position.

"They couldn’t switch on my car, they changed settings in the pits, I was gaining some positions but unfortunately Maldonado hit my car in corner four, maybe damaged something in the car," he said.

"It was very difficult to drive the car, we tried a different strategy but it was definitely a frustrating race for me."
