Barrichello sends Williams top as Jerez test ends

By on Sunday, February 13, 2011

Rubens Barrichello ended the Jerez test on top as he set a time of 1.19.832 just over an hour into today's test.

Bruno Senna replaced Nick Heidfeld in the Renault R31, setting some decent times, although Eric Bouiller has already ruled the Brazilian out of the running to replace Robert Kubica due to his inexperience.

It wasn't the greatest day for Virgin as they lost a lot of running after a mechanical fault on the MVR-02, whilst Mercedes also didn't complete too many laps.

Sauber also lost some time after Kamui Kobayashi spun off at Turn 8 at midday, but the car was undamaged.

Paul di Resta stopped the VJM04 near the end of running at Dry Sack as the rain started to fall heavily in the last 20 minutes of the session. It was the first time rain fell in any of the 7 days of running so far, but not enough to get decent running on the new Pirelli wet tyres. A stark contrast to the rain-affected tests of 12 months ago.

It was once again difficult to gain an idea of where the teams stand, although Nico Hulkenberg told German media that Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren look the best, with a few other teams impressing. When Button and Alonso were on similar stints, their times were as follows:

Alonso
25.0, 25.0, 25.0, 25.2, 24.9, 25.6, 25.7, 25.7, 25.8, 26.0, 26.0, 26.1, 26.1, 26.5, 26.6, 26.8, 27.7, 27.2, 27.7

Button
24.5, 24.9, 24.9, 25.0, 24.9, 25.1, 25.3, 25.7, 25.7, 25.3, 25.5, 25.5, 25.7, 25.8, 25.8, 26.0, 28.6, 28.5, 29.7

Although despite this data, we don't know what tyre compound they were running, or their exact fuel load. The same can be said for the following 'comparison' between last year's top two:

Vettel
26.4, 23.1, 22.2, 22.6, 23.0, 23.0, 28.5, 23.3, 24.6, 23.7, 23.5, 23.9, 34.1

Alonso
23.1, 23.1, 23.1, 24.2, 25.1, 23.7, 23.3, 23.7, 24.1, 24.2, 24.2, 24.3, 24.8, 25.2, 25.3, 25.5

The testing season continues from Friday 18th - Monday 21st February at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, where it is expected that the teams will start to show their hands.
