Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene says the squad's focus on closing the gap to Mercedes in the championship made the decision to retain Kimi Raikkonen straightforwards.
Ferrari announced on Friday morning that Raikkonen will stay with the team into 2017, alongside Sebastian Vettel, for what will be his seventh season with the outfit.
Arrivabene says the decision to keep Raikkonen was made on Thursday and that Ferrari's focus is on catching Mercedes, rather than worrying about its driver line-up.
"We confirmed Kimi because, first of all, he deserved it," said Arrivabene.
"We are looking after the interests of the team and the interests of the team were not looking for other drivers, but being concentrated on the car development. We have two great drivers; that was not an issue for us.
"We removed all the pressure from the shoulders of Kimi, taking this decision – it was actually confirmed yesterday from a phone call from the President [Sergio Marchionne].
"We turn the page and will work very hard where the problem is."
