Fernando Alonso has ruled out fighting for the 2014 Formula 1 title after a disastrous qualifying session for Ferrari at the British Grand Prix.

Alonso was knocked out during the first qualifying segment at Silverstone as Ferrari was caught out by changeable conditions.

The Spaniard will start the race from 17th on the grid.

"Anyone apart from [Nico] Rosberg or [Lewis] Hamilton who tells you they believe they can be world champion is lying," he said.

Alonso nonetheless believes that he can fight through the field in Sunday's race.

"We will try and make up as much ground as possible," he added.

"Yesterday, in the dry, we had a strong pace and even in the wet, as we saw on the first lap in Q1, it seems quite good.

"Mixed conditions might help us, but here it’s impossible to know now what the weather will do tomorrow. One thing for sure, is that starting so far back, we will see a lot of action."
