Fernando Alonso was left to rue the timing of the Safety Car period during the Singapore Grand Prix.

Alonso was running in second place on Option tyres when the race was neutralised following a collision between Sergio Perez and Adrian Sutil.

Alonso stopped for fresh Prime tyres and dropped to fourth place and was consequently unable to pass either Red Bull driver and finished just behind Daniel Ricciardo.

"A little bit unlucky with the Safety Car, when it happened we found ourselves with the Options - with [Lewis] Hamilton it worked with the strategy as he has a two second [per lap] advantage but we don’t have that, we were unable to overtake the Red Bulls with fresh tyres. Strategy was good but the Safety Car was unlucky."

Alonso was nonetheless encouraged by Ferrari's progress across the course of the weekend.

"Definitely, a lot of positives this weekend, we were competitive in free practice and in qualifying so that’s positive, but we need to jeep improving as it’s not enough," he concluded.
