Fernando Alonso says that Ferrari had no option but to adopt an attacking strategy as they attempted to claim victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Alonso stayed out on Option tyres as the race progressed and held the lead until lap 68 of 70, when Daniel Ricciardo surged through to the head of the field.

Alonso nonetheless held second place to claim Ferrari's best result of the season.

"[I'm] extremely satisfied," he said.

"It's been a tough weekend, a tough season, so this is a nice surprise. We risked today, just trying to get the victory, we went close, but extremely proud of the team and the job we did today, very very happy.

"Today we had a combination of things which made it difficult to execute and understand, we had [our] opportunity and [used] experience. We need crazy races to get the podium this year and we took it."

Team principal Marco Mattiacci told Sky Sports that Alonso's podium was the start of an important journey for the team.

"After such a difficult weekend it was not easy to see such a reaction," said Mattiacci.

"It’s a small improvement, this is the start for an important journey a boost for the morale. We cannot be too euphoric but we are starting an important journey. We showed important character."
