Fernando Alonso reckons McLaren can fight for points at the Spanish Grand Prix, though emphasised that overall progress remains the goal for the squad.

Alonso qualified in 13th position for his home race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya but is confident that he can finished inside the top 10.

"I am confident we can take points tomorrow," he said. "It doesn’t change too much, to finish ninth, 10th, 11th, one point, two points, it is not what we want.

"We want much bigger than that but it is true for the team motivation, to achieve results we can touch, because they are only hopes and words, but if we can start scoring points physically in the race that will be a help and that is what we want to do tomorrow."

Team-mate Jenson Button was 14th fastest and says his progress was stymied by brake problems.

"It was really frustrating because we put on new brakes for qualifying and every time I got to Turn 1 it massively pulled to the left," he said.

"We need to look at the reasons for it. So [on] the last run they told me to warm up the brakes in a different way, which meant they were not warm.

"When I started my lap and for the first three corners I just had massive front locking. Frustrating, because it was alright up until then."
