Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso says he hopes to be able to fight with the Red Bull drivers during Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix.

Alonso set the fifth fastest time during wet conditions in qualifying but reckons he can challenge Red Bull duo Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel in the race.

"I feel comfortable, obviously the car felt better than Bahrain and the steps we brought here confirmed the positive result," Alonso told Sky Sports.

"We know its not enough but it’s a first step. Starting fifth I think is a good result, tomorrow hopefully we can keep this position in the first laps and go in the train with the leaders.

"15 days ago we were fighting for ninth and tenth and this is not enough, hopefully tomorrow we can fight for more points. We know Mercedes is out of reach but hopefully we will not be far behind Red Bull."

Team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was knocked out in Q2 and will start from 11th.

"It's not very good but it's difficult," he said. "Issues yesterday, just some small issues with downshifting today. That’s how it is."
