Fernando Alonso set the fastest time during second practice for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Alonso's time of 1:14.818 eclipsed three time Montreal victor Lewis Hamilton by just 0.012s.

Romain Grosjean, who will drop 10 places on the grid from wherever he qualifies on Saturday, was third quickest in his Lotus E21.

Mark Webber was fourth, ahead of Nico Rosberg, Felipe Massa and Sebastian Vettel.

Adrian Sutil, Jenson Button and Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the top 10.

Button's session ended prematurely after a gearbox problem with his McLaren.

With first practice taking part in largely wet conditions, teams were eager to try Pirelli's development tyre, meaning that there was plenty of running throughout the 90 minute session.

But low track temperatures - peaking at 20*c - resulted in drivers struggling at getting heat into the front tyres. Several drivers locked up and ran wide at the hairpin, while personal bests were largely set on the second or third hot lap on the option tyres.
