Fernando Alonso has been discharged from a Spanish hospital following his crash during pre-season testing in Spain.

Alonso's McLaren left the circuit at Turn 3 early on Sunday afternoon and he struck the wall on the inside of the corner.

Alonso was transferred to hospital by helicopter, having initially been taken to the circuit's Medical Centre by ambulance.

McLaren confirmed on Monday that it suspected Alonso's crash had been caused by the windy conditions on Sunday and dismissed other speculation.

Alonso will sit out this week's final test at the track in order to recuperate for the Australian Grand Prix.

"Following his testing accident at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya last Sunday, we are pleased to confirm that Fernando Alonso has now left hospital," read a McLaren statement.

"He has returned to his family’s home in Spain for further rest and recuperation.

"As a result, he will sit out this week’s final winter test, at which he was due to share driving duties with Jenson Button. Kevin Magnussen, McLaren-Honda’s test and reserve driver, will replace him.

"Jenson will be testing the McLaren-Honda car tomorrow (February 26), and the team will confirm the full day-to-day running order in due course."
