"$5m for the offence, $95m for Ron being a twat"

Tom Bower's biography of F1 tycoon Bernie Ecclestone has revealed some interesting insights into recent F1 history and the bitter relationship between Ecclestone, Max Mosley and former McLaren boss Ron Dennis.

Ecclestone says: “When Flavio [Briatore] stuck a knife in my back, he charmed me and said, ‘It’s good for you to let out some blood.’

“But when Ron puts the knife in, he wants you to know that he’s in charge and he’s killed you.”

When the Spygate saga unravelled during the 2007 season, Ecclestone had to calm down Mosley, who wanted a harsher punishment for McLaren, largely down to jealousies between said parties.

Mosley wanted to ban McLaren for two years, which Ecclestone talked him out of, instead imposing a fine of $100m. Mosley claimed this was “$5 million for the offence and $95 million for Ron being a twat”.

The book also reveals that Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore - a close ally of Ecclestone - share a nickname of 'Jumbo' for Lewis Hamilton whilst Ecclestone is less than satisifed with the new FIA president, “He put the president’s hat on and his personality changed” he said when it came to Jean Todt.
