Medals to decide championship?

Bernie Ecclestone is confident his plan to replace the current points system with Olympic Games-style 'medals' will be introduced in time for the 2009 season opener.

The F1 Chief Executive revealed recently he wants the drivers on the podium to be presented gold, silver and bronze medals, rather than awarded ten, eight and six points respectively.

The change, he argues, will rid the sport of the situation of the 2008 series finale in Brazil, where Lewis Hamilton was able to finish just fifth and still be crowned world champion.

If Ecclestone's new system had been in place, the McLaren driver and Felipe Massa would have been tied on five gold medals apiece, setting up a dash to be first to the chequered flag and the title.

It is believed that points will still be awarded to the teams for the constructors' championship on the basis of the current system.

Drivers finishing races 'out of the medals', meanwhile, will not score points, but their finishing positions over the season will determine their championship ranking.

Ecclestone, 78, told The Times: "The FIA and all the teams are behind it and it will be done."

He insists that the system will ensure that the emphasis of the front-running drivers' approach to races will be on winning, rather than scoring good points.

"The whole point will be, when they get to Melbourne for the first race, the guys will want to leave there with a gold medal. They (will not) want to leave with ten, eight or six points," Ecclestone said.

The matter has been discussed by FIA President Max Mosley, but the details are yet to be worked out.

Ecclestone's system will require ratification by the World Motor Sport Council at its December meeting.
Ecclestone has been talking about this for a while now, but now he looks to be quite serious with it and wants it to be in 2009 season already. He's the kind of guy who can get things done if he wants so what do you think about this idea?

I personally like it. The current system rewards consistency more, but consistency is nowadays more about car reliability than the driver's skill so I don't think it's very fair if someone would have to see his championship hopes to literally blow away.

The way I see it, Bernie's not so sure he'll be around for the next summer Olympics, and he just loves those medal ceremonies!

Medals could be awarded instead of trophies, but not instead of points :

Its a dumb idea. What happens to the guys in lower than 3rd? Its hardly worth racing for them. Bernie should solve the problem with F1 not make it worse.

And I want a point for the pole-position!!! That would make the qualifycations much more exciting. The medals is a good idea I think. But don't you mean 10-6-4, iceman? :p

this medal system simply puts emphasis on race wins - the one with most race wins after a season will become drivers champion. surely there are plus and minuses using any kind of scoring systems.

example; for 2009, there are 17 races...so a driver will aim to win the first 9 races to become champion - what if (sounds impossible but it can happen(???)) for example massa wins the first 9 races and hamilton 2nd in the first 9....then under the scoring system that would be massa 90, hamilton 72 with 8 races to go, the championship still wide open...but under the medal system its game over even if hamilton wins the remaining races and massa dnf's all of it.

but my stand on this is it's worth a try, it's just the same as the old scoring system, only the points count is removed - and gives more emphasis on race wins.
