A1GP opener may be non-points event

ZandvoortThe first round of the new A1GP season is set to be a non-championship race, reports this week's Autosport magazine.

A delay in the production of the new 'Powered by Ferrari' car means there will not be a full grid available for the races at Zandvoort next weekend.

The opening points race has already been pushed back one, following the cancellation of the round at Mugello (originally scheduled for last weekend) and a maximum of 19 cars will be ready for Zandvoort with 23 nations expected to compete this season.

When asked by Autosport whether the opening race would be a non-points event, an A1GP spokeswoman said: "That is something we have to address and a decision hasn't been made. That fact that we are admitting that we will have to look at it means that it is an option."

It is not yet clear which teams will not make Zandvoort, and the series will not release an official entry list until every nation has launched its team. The Team Monaco launch is scheduled for today.

A1GP's technical and operations director John Wickham says the delay of the cars was caused by "parts coming through late, particularly electrical systems."

A group test for six new cars at Snetterton this week was scrapped in favour of running "12 or 13" cars at the circuit next week, just three days before practice begins at Zandvoort.

I said earlier in this thread how I was concerned for AIGP.Sadly my fears could be proven correct,as the farce with the car being late and Mugello not being ready smacks of poor organisation.

Team India to miss first race

New Delhi: It was a race against time that A1GP has lost. To assemble 25 cars on the grid in Zandvoort on Sunday, just 45 days after the A1GP Powered by Ferrari car passed its crash test, was always going to be a tough ask. Unfortunately, India is one of those teams that will not be racing this weekend.
Team India confirmed the developments on Tuesday.
“As you are aware, for the new season of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, A1 Team India planned to participate in the opening event at Zandvoort on October 4-5, 2008. Due to circumstances beyond the control of A1 Team India, there has been an unfortunate delay in the ‘build programme’ of the new A1GP cars, and the Team India car has been affected. As a result, the team will not be able to take part in the Zandvoort race,’’ CEO Andaleeb Sehgal said in a statement.
Driver Narain Karthikeyan, who was in the UK, is on his way back home. The series set itself a tight schedule with less than 11 months to design, build and test the new car and make sure all the teams received identical machinery. Any delay in the schedule was always going to impact on the ability to deliver to all the teams.
The first round of the 2008-09 at Mugello was moved following a delay in the ‘build schedule’ of the new chassis.
After dashing rumours that the season opener in the Netherlands could be non-points race, as at least five teams aren’t expected to receive their cars in time to compete in the event, the organisers have announced a revised points system, reducing the advantage for teams that are participating.
Now, the championship will count each team’s best nine scores from 10 rounds. Every nation will be able to drop both the sprint and feature race scores from their worst event.
“With the recent change of the points scoring system that allows a team to drop its worst event score, India’s chances of challenging for the World Cup of Motorsport title will not be adversely affected by missing the Zandvoort event.
The situation we find ourselves in is unfortunate, but the morale of the team is high and we are focused on competing at the next race at Chengdu, China and through the rest of the season,’’ Sehgal added.
This week’s test at Snetterton, scheduled for Oct 1-2, will now take place on Thursday and Friday, with the first practice session (which has been extended to one hour 50 minutes) taking place at Zandvoort on Saturday.

Indonesia's winning livery



A1 Team Indonesia’s car will be livered in this impressive red-and-white striped design, thanks to a competition the team ran in the off-season.

The squad, who hadn’t changed its red-and-white paint-scheme in the first three seasons of A1GP, threw it open to the public to design the team’s A1GP Powered by Ferrari car for 2008/09.

The winning design, by Fasttrack Media, combines modern simplicity with Indonesian culture, with the national symbol of the Garuda bird featuring prominently on the livery. A representation of the Garuda appears on the coat of arms of Indonesia, and from this season the team’s car will also be nicknamed Garuda.

The bird’s head and neck are placed on the nose cone, with the red-and-white striped panels on the side pod and engine cover acting as its wings and tail.

“There were some fantastic and creative designs submitted, making it difficult to choose just one winner,” said Bagoes Hermanto, A1 Team Indonesia’s team principal. “I hope the enthusiasm and dedication shown by the fans can be translated into results this season.”
