The Atlas Experiment - LHC (at CERN)
The Atlas Experiment - LHC (at CERN)
I don't know whether you are following but on September 10th, the biggest experiment of all science will be made in French-Swiss border line, namely the Atlas Experiment. Large Hadron Collider has been built as the ever biggest and largest equipment in order to understand what happened just after the Big Bang by colliding subatomic particles "hadrons" and see what will going on.
This experiment will be broadcasted live on http://webcast.cern.ch/. If you want to listen a summerized explanation of it, you can watch "rock star physicist" Brian Cox, also a pariticipant to this experiment, on Ted site http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/bria ... lider.html If you want to gain more and more information which will give you a solid background about the matter, then you can watch BBC Documantary, so called Atom, as three parts: Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3
However, there are some who criticise for making such an experiment in that (1) there is a possibility of creating small black holes in the universe (which could be the end of the world) and (2) scientists are claimed to play the God's role. Well, CERN insist this experiment will cause no abnormality which will end the world (Debates are really staggering, geez).
We'll see on the September 10th, 09.00 CEST (CEST is UTC+2)

Wow,there's been nothing about this in England. This seems like a monmental experiment,I can't wait to see the results.Hope we don't see a farce take place, sure we won't...
Re: The Atlas Experiment - LHC (at CERN)
Yeah, we in here have been talking about this the whole week. Interesting part is, that those black holes can combine to a one big hole in 4 years. And what year is 4 years later? 2012.
All the predictions about end of the world come to that year!

They need to wait till the end of F1 and MotoGP season, then fire that thing up.
Re: The Atlas Experiment - LHC (at CERN)
According to literally everyone at my school, everyone is meant to die tomorrow and this is their reason for it. Sounds cool.
Re: The Atlas Experiment - LHC (at CERN)
well we have been taught about it. Basically they have built a large circle of circumferace of around 25 km underground and they let particles and anti particles go to oppostie direction from a fixed point. With the help of magnetic field the particles gor round the cirles and collide at a very high speed.
As far as i know creation of black holes and stuff like that are all a rumor.

CERN reiterates safety of LHC on eve of first beam
http://press.web.cern.ch/press/PressRel ... 7.08E.html“The LHC will enable us to study in detail what nature is doing all around us,” said CERN Director General Robert Aymar. “The LHC is safe, and any suggestion that it might present a risk is pure fiction.”

Wait 40 days mate, collision will take place on October 21st It's just started to accelerate protons.phil1993 wrote:WE'RE ALIVE. YAY!

So we were never going to die today?Ali wrote:Wait 40 days mate, collision will take place on October 21st It's just started to accelerate protons.phil1993 wrote:WE'RE ALIVE. YAY!
Our tutor in school actually had to reassure us all that if the world was going to end (this was at 9am this morning) we would of died half an hour ago. Some people were actually that bothered about it.
edit: can't they do it on 3rd November after F1 is done? I want to watch teh Brazillian Grand Prix.

jeez, your classmates must be strange you guys really know how to depress me on a wet cold autumn day when i have tons (history, maths, chemistry, niology, geography) of homework to do tonight.

Your not wrong there.phil1993 wrote:jeez, your classmates must be strange you guys really know how to depress me on a wet cold autumn day when i have tons (history, maths, chemistry, niology, geography) of homework to do tonight.
Re: The Atlas Experiment - LHC (at CERN)
i bet this whole 'world will end' thing was started by some geek/nerd on an internet forum and rumour spread until half of the world had brown underwear at 8.29 this morning (me not included, although we did joke about in class and got under the table shouting, 'its the end'

If we did manage to end the world, I would laugh out loud at our ingenuity and self-destruction for the 0.0001 seconds I had left for death.
If there was a big red button in a cave, saying "end of the world button - DO NOT PRESS", some guy in a white suit would press it, but not after writing several theses on what would happen next.
Don't mind me, I'm not distrustful of science, but if any experiment had even a slight chance of, ya know, KILLING US ALL, I personally would vote no experiment.

No, I'm not calmer. Just more jaded.
