Gilles Villeneuve for me, but Schumi was the most successful.

Gilles Villeneuve, of course. He pushed every single car he drove to the limit. He didn't care if the tyre blew or the front wing was missing.

It would always be Micheal ... No other Ferrari driver has taken then with a streak of 5 Driver world championship & 6 or more constructors title

who are those 16 thousand odd members surveyed...and what was their window knowledge (i mean years of watching F1) of F1...obviously many of them will be under 35 - 40 which takes us to 1972....and many of them even did not know Gilles, let alone watching him drive... ( i am one too) so obviously michael will have more votes...It would be good to know the most popular scuderia driver if we also know the percentage of age groups choosing them.....

what do you say

good point. every generation has it´s hero or heroes. But I would say Michael is it definitely. he´s won 5 drivers and 6 constructors titles with ferrari. he led them back to success and his skills are unmatched by every other ferrari driver.
gilles was fast and a hero for the tifosi because he drove his heart out, but he did also a couple of stupid things and was totally incomplete compared to michael. he could beat michael on his day because of his bravery, but over a whole season he would be absolutely chanceless.

i watched a canadian documentary called "the life and times of villeneuve" it was about gilles and jacques from 1997 right after jacques won the championship and they rated jacques higher than his father! both as a driver and in terms of popularity among canadians.

so if even the canadians rate jacques higher....

gilles will never be forgotten and i can´t imagine a single tifoso not loving him, but michael is THE man when you think of ferrari f1.

The most popular is Gilles Villeneuve because he die (, like Jesus)
Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, Rory Byrne, Michael Schumacher = DREAM TEAM

Schumacher and Jean Alesi were quite amazing to watch...

I often wondered if Jean had a better Ferrari, he would have been the world champion.

Of coruse Michael is generally the most popular, but one has to take into account that 70s and 80s Ferrari pilots didn't enjoy the benefit of the Internet, digital media and the whole gamut of advanced technology! Otherwise, I think Gilles Villeneuve and Regazzoni would have been much more popular today!

Ascari and Surtees were way old, so everyone ignores them except those who lived at the time, but Michele Alboreto should be higher in the list. He was fast, happy and gentlemanly, and should be way more popular. It's just that no-one probably remembers him.

Anyway, since when was Michael Schumacher "popular"? Successful yes, but Gilles should have been top, and Niki Lauda was very popular with the Italian fans before he went to Macca.
No, I'm not calmer. Just more jaded.
