^^^ Have to agree this Mclaren's development rate has outpaced Ferrari at least considering visual updates.IMO they should build new wind tunnel ..current is oldest one in f1 ..was build in iiirc 96.I guess after spain they started to concentrate more resource on 2009 car :s

Lets see how this race goes ..its too early for WDC call.

Mclaren are using a mechanically actuated torque control device , that would explain Lewis wet weather performance at Silverstone and also his drive at Hockenheim.

The blackmail story is a fabrication from the British press, truth is we don't know what happened behind those closed doors and how the words fell. A row, for sure - but exactly why and how things happened we have no idea. Not even Ron called it blackmail and Alonso hasn't spoken about it. I hope the truth will get out in time, but until then...

And now I'm WAY off topic, sorry...

its a system that uses 2 extra paddles below the gear shift paddles. In lower gears when the paddles are actuated it delivers a soft torque as a result limits wheel spin.

Nah, but it might be in the grey area. AFAIK Renault had tried something similar but Alonso wasn't satisfied with the system.

McLaren have recently been using steering wheels with 4 paddles, rather than the usual two. The 'telegraph' have reported that, while the upper paddles are used for conventional up and downshifting, the additional levers allow the driver to select a different engine mapping, independently from the gear shifting.

The currently used standard engine control unit enable to teams to program a number of predefined engine mappings, optimising traction or driveability in different conditions or at different speeds. The new system enables the driver to change gears and simultaneously change to a different engine mapping by pulling the paddles at the same time. Most importantly, it looks to be allowed by current regulations as these only stipulate that engine mappings can only be changed by the driver. Any automatic change acting upon a gear shift is forbidden.

Already considered a manual traction control system, the drivers have not the ability to effectively limit wheel spin when accelerating out of slow corners while not reducing power at higher speeds. When finally considered legal by the FIA, Ferrari is likely to be quick and copy the system to recover from their current performance deficit.

McLaren is totally innocent so far as there's no ruling preventing this system (and I have to - as much as I hate it - give them credit for their innovativeness :<>: )

The rulings stipulate a driver is not allowed to change engine mapping at the same time he changes gears. McLaren found a way around this rule by introducing these two new engine-mapping-chaning paddles separated from the normal gear-changing paddles.

But Macca being innocent right now doesn't mean anything. Ze FIA may change the rules at an eye's whim (see Renault's mass-damper) and all of a sudden such a system can be forbidden. We'll just have to wait and see.

Count 4 paddles on this replica

There's a video I found on You Tube about steering wheels: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXrBi1Y46zU

J.J. Lehto says that Renault also has a similar system and that Alonso doesn't like it too much and doesn't even use it. Also, he says that it takes a lot of training to get it right, and it probably brings a tenth per lap max. Drivers have to operate two paddles with both hands, which requires a lot of coordination skills. Then, he says that McLaren has overall got their car working really well with aerodynamics etc.

Basically he downplays the significance of that wheel. Also, he says that it depends on the engine supplier if the teams are gonna implement a similar system.

What about Mark Webber ? His engine blew up in Germany, isn't he allowed to use a fresh one in Hungary then ?
