Yeah i remember from some commentary that they get a free change for first engine failure.[/quote]

The Bahrain Grand Prix stewards have decided that no action is to be taken against Lewis Hamilton after he failed to attend the medical centre at Sakhir immediately after his practice accident on Friday.

Anyone else notice in practice 1 Hamilton used intermediates on this fronts and dry's on his rears at the very start to presumably lay rubber in the pits? Isn't using tyres which aren't a complete set against the rules? I better give a Charlie a ring. :p

The drivers use different engines and gearboxes on Fridays so there will be no penalties for anyone if they break something then.

28.4 For the purposes of this Article and Article 28.6 only, an Event will be deemed to comprise P3, the qualifying practice session and the race.
a) Each driver may use no more than one engine for two consecutive Events in which his team competes. Other than under f) below, should a driver use a replacement engine before the end of the qualifying practice session he will drop ten places on the starting grid at that Event and an additional ten places each time a further engine is used.
Unless the driver fails to finish the race (see below) the engine fitted to the car at the end of the Event must remain in it until the end of the next Event. Any driver who failed to finish the race at the first of the two Events for reasons which the technical delegate accepts as being beyond the control of the team or driver, may start the second with a different engine without a penalty being incurred.
That says in simple words, what happens on Fridays stays on Fridays.

I don't think it was only for australia gp; as I understood it, the very first engine change this year will not mean 10 places back on the grid. maybe I am wrong...

Good that we finally had it cleared. :p Anyway, anyone who's followed FP results have noticed that many engines have blown there, but no penalties have been given. So it's really that simple and this rule has been around since last year already. The idea was that with different engines there would be more driving during Fridays.

Yaa thats right engine has to survive for two and gear box for four consecutive races. If Lewis needs to change, then he will be using his one and only free change per season. Watch and wait.

Like quoted above the Friday practice sessions aren't part of the "race". I'm fairly sure teams aren't using the race engines outside the required events (P3,Q,Race).

I agree with macel. The teams use different engines for P1 and P2. They use their "race" engines only in P3, the Qualifying Session and in the race.

As my quote only covers the engine and the gearbox, does he get a penalty?
