2014 rule changes and new 'Power Units'

Only event I've got too in the past couple of years is the recent Indycar race at Pocono. But weirdly I don't miss going to lots of races a year. Due to work I've been to so many over the past 20+ years that I think I've exhausted myself.

Still. The first whiff of the race track when you arrive is pretty special.

I went to WEC practice at Silverstone earlier this year, which was a bargain. Mini Festival at Brands. F1 at Silverstone; Spa/Monza to come. I just kind of need some money now

I'd love to go to an IndyCar race at some point.

Have you been to motor racing events?

Walking into the circuit, there's just the smell of racing... and then the sound. It's not like anywhere else...

Motor racing events... well I went to Sonoma, there was no actual race but there were various cars rounding the track, a few of which seemed to be Formula Ford 2000 open-wheel cars. I loved the sound of those! But you know what? I'm not 100 percent sure, but I believe Formula Ford 2000 cars have four-cylinder engines. Then again, I'm not 100 percent sure it was a Formula Ford, but it was something along those lines.

Either way, I don't think it was a V8.

My point is you can still hear the "sound of racing" with other types of engines, not just V8s.

V8s arent as good as V10s. V10s arent as good as the Turbos. The problem is the new units have 6 stupid quick upshifts then two really long gears and its so high pitched theres no bass or grunt.

Next year's engines will be turbocharged. And as far as I know it will still be up to the teams to decide how to set the gear ratios.

While I'm glad to see the back of the screamers and looking forward to welcoming back the turbos, I have some concern. I recently experienced the Indycar turbo engines at Pocono and was left somewhat underwhelmed, as they were a lot quieter than I expect from a leading single seater formula. I know F1 and Indycar are as similar as chalk and cheese, but even after a couple of sound bites from Renault and Mercedes they seem a little too similar to what I experienced at Indycars. That is the only negative thing I'll say about them.

kals, listen to the sound samples from the old williams v6 turbo era. Sounds good to me but I don't know if the sound will eventually sound like it. The mercedes and renault sound is a computerized sound, simulated, and I think the recording technique made the sound less flattering than it's supposed to be. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I think that when the engines are in their cars and being tested on track, it will sound much better. Because if it sounds like a vacuum cleaner in real life, F1 would lose alot of fans.

What I'm kinda worried about is that the 2014 cars will be heavier and 2 or 3 secs slower, since this years cars already are slower than the v10 era.

Im going to swear here. Why arent Formula 1 going Turbo Diesel? Its much more economical, more torque, same amount as power. Much more road relevant. Just look at Le Mans.
