Ha, 5 then. :p Still not very long for a partnership to become so iconic. I doubt McLaren-Mercedes will stir the same nostalgic feelings, and by the end of 2014 that will have lasted almost four times as long.

To me, 1998 + 1999 is iconic. As is 2007.

But you need success a lot of the time. Many years were plagued by unreliability or sub-standard cars.

Correct, that's because those 5 seasons together yielded a huge amount of return - 4 drivers and 4 constructors championships. Plus is it remembered for Prost v Senna, Senna's three titles and part of the Marlboro McLaren history.

Mercedes has been a great partner for McLaren, but that has always seemed very cold. Plus during those 20 seasons (including 2014) there has been some very very poor cars and engines. And when you consider that this partnership has only yielded one drivers championship in the past 13 years, it's hardly memorable.

I was always under the impressing that it was Newey's desire for such a tight package that the engines for example, were susceptible to problems.

That's fair, but also there were a couple of years when McLaren were unimpressed with the performance and reliability of the engines.

Definitely. They let each other down. And it seems sad that such an iconic combination spawned just 3 drivers titles and just one constructors title in 14 years (they wont win this year or next year). Yet Honda was with them for 5 years and tey took 4 WDC/WCC lol!

Its quite weird really because I see the livery of mclaren-honda as iconic but as Phil said, its Marlboro. The Honda livery i find Iconic is the Mugen-Jordan relationship not the Mclaren. I always see Mclaren Mercedes as THE iconic relationship, the Silver/Black WEST and the Chrome Arrows. The red/white was used on the Mclaren-ford MP4-8 to MP4-11 which is 1992-1996, so its not the Honda livery but Marlboro. Phillip Morris jumped ship to solely focus on Ferrari for 1997 instead of doing both teams.

What this does mean for Formula 1 is that the new engines are attractive to manufacturers. Honda has signed up, which leads you to believe that others will be interested as well.

Teams could be very smart if they play their cards right...

Remember the Lexus rumours? Now Honda is back, let's keep an eye out...

lol!

Phil; Lexus vs Infinity vs Honda. Lexus and Infinity are big in America. Honda is too, think theyve dropped their Acura badging for a while.

luxury brand names would be huge for F1 but will there be the teams to use them?

Great deal to Mclaren, Honda (with BMW) are still the best in the world manufacturing engines, the team reassures stability for it`s future whith a strong and competitive partner, while Mercedes buying his own team etc etc, is always in the edge for getting good results, if they don`t the money for the F1 "program" might end all of the sudden, like Jaguar, Toyota and Honda themselves, we have seen this before, so well done to Mclaren on this move, the nostalgia or liveries are not important.

A minor point but Acura are as big as ever over here in USA.

The Acura line of vehicles over here is a completely different range of cars to Honda. I'm sure there are some common parts but each class of vehicle shares no real similarity.

I drive a Honda Accord here (*yawn*), which is totally different to the UK version of the Accord. The UK Accord is actually the Acura T-series here in USA.

So is Phil's prediction of Marussia Mugen Honda looking good then? I say no. Why? Phil's predictions NEVER and I mean never come true.

Sorry Phil.
