2013 Formula One Discussion
Re: 2013 Formula One Discussion
I just really hate the way the selection process took place. I don't know what the reasoning behind it was.
USF1 sunk before it begun, Campos only made the grid when Kolles stepped in (and even now they're gone) while Manor (Marussia) is still struggling financially. Caterham only joined when BMW pulled out of F1 IIRC.
I would just love to know what went on in selecting those three.

Re: 2013 Formula One Discussion
THey were only there for Mosely's £40million budget cap pawns, wasn't they. The actual selection is confusing but I dont see why anybody would want to join Formula 1 unless they are buying a Force India or a Sauber or an STR team.
The newest teams have showed how hard it is to progress forward. Hell its horrible to say it but if we did lose Caterham/Marussia, the worst team would be Williams F1!!!! Thats a horrid thought.

Re: 2013 Formula One Discussion
The worse part is that outside of the top four, no-one is particularly strong financially.
Regarding Marussia, Pat Symonds says engine choice is between Mercedes and Ferrari.

Re: 2013 Formula One Discussion
I love Pat Symonds. I still love Flavio. I think theres so much more to singapore 2008, I dont believe Alonso knew about it. He kept asking if the team was sure about coming in that lap saying its far too early. Id say marussia would be better off with Ferrari.
I know Lotus are struggling, they were going to sell up before Abu Dhabi, but because Kimi won they asked for more money didn't they, and the buyer pulled out saying 'no chance'. Id be worried abit about McLaren also, things dont look too healthy and Mercedes too may pull a BMW if they dont get results next year.
Who are the engine-team combinations for next year?
Ferrari engines- Ferrari
Mercedes engines- Mclaren, Mercedes, Force India (?), Sauber (?)
Renault Engines- STR, RBR, Lotus, Caterham,
Marussia in the middle of Merc/Fez? Doesnt look good if nobody takes up a Ferrari engine. Infact I dare say it would be outrageous.

Pat Symonds has done a very good job at Marussia, you'll enjoy this

Alonso certainly has a chequered history but I don't believe Alonso knew about it. Flavio still maintains his innocence - in fact, I believe he was found innocent - the FIA did ban him but legally there's insufficient evidence - http://plus.autosport.com/premium/featu ... ore-uncut/
McLaren should be fine, Ferrari is fine. Red Bull is fine now they're heavily funded by Renault. Mercedes, I agree with.
Next year:
Ferrari: Ferrari, Sauber
Mercedes: McLaren, Mercedes, Force India
Renault: Red Bull, Lotus, Williams, Caterham
STR yet to confirm, either Ferrari or Renault. Marussia either Mercedes or Ferrari. McLaren could jump ship to Honda in 2015. Toyota rumoured to return under the Lexus brand in 2015, but it seems a weak rumour.

Re: 2013 Formula One Discussion
Briatore always maintained that it was Piquet's idea, otherwise why would he sack him halfway through 2009 if it was his and Pat's idea. I believe that Briatore was dispatched as part of Mosely's leaving legacy. He couldnt stand Flavio. Pat and Flav should run Ferrari :P
I swore i read that Sauber was turning to Mercedes for next year. Though it was probably a rumour. Oh heres the article I remember reading http://www.auto123.com/en/racing-news/f ... tid=151711
Heres the one I read about STR going to Renau; http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2013/02/05/t ... deal-2014/

Re: 2013 Formula One Discussion
STR to Renault is fairly likely. Sauber staying with Ferrari is likely.
I don't agree with Flavio about some aspects of the sport, but he does make sense about other aspects.
The reason I struggle to see Ferrari & Marussia together - even though Bianchi is there - is that Luca diM has repeatedly rubbished the 2010 teams.

Re: 2013 Formula One Discussion
I also believe Alonso had no idea about the "piquet-crashgate", proof is in his body language. Compare it to Hockenheim's "Alonso is faster than you-gate"......
He said after the Singapore race how much the SC had helped him, also his radio conversation wondering if that was the right call..... Im sure he figured it out later though (ie way before it became public).
I think Briatore and Pat got dealt a tough one. I'm not sure how guilty they are, but they should have never gone fwd with it; even if Piquet brought it up. What if someone had gotten hurt? that would have been terrible for the sport and everyone involved. Awful.

Re: 2013 Formula One Discussion
Will be weird if Sauber do leave Ferrari engines. Got to be the first time ever there is no customer Ferrari's.

Re: 2013 Formula One Discussion
I don't think Sauber will leave Ferrari. Mercedes basically has Force India as their main partner from 2014, so I should imagine Sauber staying as they are.

Force India have supposedly signed a reserve driver, announcement due soon. I'd guess there's three obvious candidates: Conor Daly, who is doing testing for them tomorrow, but who is doing GP3 and the Indy500. James Calado - doing GP2 and signed to Todt's management and Luiz Razia, but he was doing GT racing last week.
