Yep Chavez dead. Not just Maldonado, but Venezuelan motorsport in general with all those GP2 drivers.

Like Autosport (and Phil), I have CAPSLOCK as well...

Sadly for Williams, VB doesn't have the funding that Maldonado does. Back to the drawing board for them then, no pun intended.

This is going to sound incredibly, incredibly crass but I previously wondered if part of the reason for Maldonado's mentality and continued stupid driving over a period of years (not even nearly killing a marshal made him change his ways) was because he had so much financial backing his career and drive has never been under threat. Maybe if there's the prospect the £30m will disappear and he can only rely on results he'll reign things in a bit...

Chances are Chavez's party will be re-elected on a wave of sympathy and the funding will continue. Maldonado's been built up as such a national hero they wouldn't cut the funding. That'd be my guess.

So sorry to hear about Hugo's death... :( Maldonado will have a new motive to fight now.

Maldonado will hope that Venezuelan politicians remember his win and not his inglorious return to Caracas when he shunted on Lap 2 of a demo run.

Have you seen the Venezuelan TV footage of that Phil? It didn't show the crash. You saw him go into the corner, then it switched to Gonzalez sitting in a GP2 car in their makeshift paddock...

6th March 2013. Grove, UK. In the wake of yesterday's announcement that Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, has passed away after a long battle with cancer, the Williams F1 Team sends its deepest condolences to the family of President Chávez and the people of Venezuela.

Can't believe the first GP of 2013 is merely just over a week away.

AUTOSPORT magazine is out. What are the new features? I prefer the old design, but good thing they moved Mark hughes' column to the top.
