2012 Formula One Discussion
Re: 2012 Formula One Discussion
DRS needs to be put in places where overtaking is difficult. Putting it on the main straight/longest straight is pointless. Overtaking will happen on the backstraight in China or the batshit long one in Korea regardless of DRS.
Put it on the smaller straights to allow for more overtaking and to allow cars to close up. It need to close the gap, not mean a free pass.
For example:
- Silverstone: Put it on the S/F line
- Spa: Approaching Blanchimont, S/F line
- Monza: Approaching Parabolica
- Abu Dhabi: S/F line
Not on the ridiculously long straights

Re: 2012 Formula One Discussion
I agree with the comment about DRS. We did all moan claiming how F1 had no overtaking, when we finally got it we moaned it was boring overtaking! - There needs to be a element of skill in overtaking, not being 1 second away from someone and being able to easily pass on a long straight. Sadly, I see DRS being around for a few more years yet though.
I'm looking forward to this season and will be cheering for Hulkenberg and Hamilton. I really believe that Hulkenberg and Di Resta will be a great in team battle, I think the Hulk will come out of his shell and show the quality he did in previous seasons before Formula 1. Who knows, a good season from the Hulk and we could see him end up at Ferrari if they don't want to take a risk with Kubica.
Can't wait for the season!
Oh, and Hi guys. I've not been around for ages.

Completely agree. I said it last season, DRS should be put in places where overtaking doesn't usually happen. Turkey for example was ridiculous.phil1993 wrote:DRS needs to be put in places where overtaking is difficult. Putting it on the main straight/longest straight is pointless.
But I'd also say Formula 1 would be no worse without DRS. Pirelli tyres made the races more exciting, if you took DRS away the races in 2011 would have been no worse IMO.
Re: 2012 Formula One Discussion
Yeah, I think I read 27% of moves were down to DRS. Tyres & KERS combined would still be fine. Just don't have the DRS zone on the main overtaking point. Had Montreal been dry, it'd been a joke. You could see how easy it was when it was dry in the last 10 laps.
Re: 2012 Formula One Discussion
Don't remind me of the Montreal DRS farce.
Am not saying Schumacher would have been on the podium, but it would have been nice to see him able to put up more of a fight.

Re: 2012 Formula One Discussion
My problem with DRS is that overtaking using DRS is low, but id love to see how many overtaked have happened as a RESULT of using DRS. We saw loads of cars getting really close thanks to DRS helping them going into the first corner, coming out of the DRS zone and the boost from DRS allowing them to overtake the car afterwards.
We dont see no figures about that

Re: 2012 Formula One Discussion
Don't forget though that it was the first time for DRS and a lot of the zones were educated guesses. This year they have actual data to go on and several will be made longer or shorter to account for the ease or difficulty that there was in passing last year to make it a bit more interesting.

Vitaly Petrov claims he was treated like a child

Re: 2012 Formula One Discussion
I get the impression he needs to be treated like a child. Remember his managers comments after that interview he gave criticising Lotus? And as stated in the article, Boullier saying they basically needed to do time keeping for him, basic things such as telling him when to have breakfast!
Re: 2012 Formula One Discussion
Oh, really?
Petrov needs to grow up and stop overexaggerate.“In 2010, I had some problems with my team, fighting with Mark Slade. He’s a very clever engineer, but it was not a good relationship. They put him up high because he had 20 years of experience and you are the child. If he told you to jump through a window, you must jump through a window,”

Now this is alarming for Ferrari:

They still can't figure out the car. Damn testing banFry did admit, however, that one of the problems the team is facing is that the car tends to have a narrow performance window - where its form fluctuates dramatically as conditions change.
"We drop in and out of having a good balance or not, and that is something we are working on trying to understand still. Yesterday there were times when the car was good and times when it suddenly changed, and that is what we are trying to understand."

Didn't Kimi have Slade for like 5 years at McLaren without any problems?reppo wrote:Oh, really?Petrov needs to grow up and stop overexaggerate.“In 2010, I had some problems with my team, fighting with Mark Slade.
