Barcelona Day 1 – Test summary [Report + Pictures]

Lotus F1 Team returned to the track today for the first of four days testing at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, Spain. Romain Grosjean took the wheel, completing 73 laps and setting the fastest time of the day.

On a warm day in Barcelona, Romain Grosjean made a successful return to the cockpit, and was pleased with the day’s progress:

“The car was feeling very good and it’s great to bounce back from our dramas to set the fastest time of the day. It’s clear we have solved the problem we encountered and now we have to complete a very full test programme this week”

The Frenchman was also full of praise for the manner in which the team reacted after a difficult week back at Enstone:

“The feeling in the team is fantastic and it’s like last week’s issues never happened. My crew told me that the problems would make us stronger, and this is true. The chassis is stronger, and all the team is stronger. We gathered good data today and we have a few interesting things that we would like to confirm tomorrow which should help us make a good step forwards.”

Technical Director James Allison was also satisfied after a productive day at the circuit, with no major dramas and a busy schedule completed:

“Our main target for today was to compress as much set-up work as we could into the first day as we are playing catch-up relative to our rivals at this track. Of course, we want to complete as many laps as possible, but this second objective is inevitably compromised somewhat by needing to make many short runs punctuated by set-up changes.”

“Obviously, we’re very pleased to complete the day without any major difficulties to the car after such a troubled start here last week.”

Romain will return to the track tomorrow morning, with the session kicking off at 09h00 CET.

Stay tuned to @Lotus_F1Team on Twitter for updates throughout the week.

It really looks like they are routing exhaust gasses back under the engine cover. Must be burning hot.

Today, he is okay and driving.
How on earth did he manage to get food poisoning in Spain? We are so hysteric about the thing that the food safety is much higher than in our neighbour countries. I mean, coming to Spain and catching a cold? possible. Being run over by a motorbike? possible. End up being deaf because of a guy with a pneumatic drill next to you, while you're waiting for the lights to turn green? probable. But food poisoning?

@Lotus_F1Team News just in: testing today will be extended to finish at 17:30 local time, presumably to compensate for the lost running this morning.

Maybe Kovalainen did not get the food poisoning in Spain. No one else in Caterham has been sick. He could have eaten something in the plane or before the flight.

Grosjean should do today race distance according Turun Sanomat, but none of the teams have not done any long stints yet. Kovalainen did his best time with super softs. And what is Ferrari doing? Are they still learning the car?

I hate to prove Khodr wrong, but Schumacher just left the pits to start a run.

I guess it's the same car. Mclaren has the same car for both drivers.

I´ve read somewhere else that:

"Ferrari 2012 car is hard to handle when going out of the turn. They also have dificulties warming the rear tyres. The new Pirelli tyres have a better grip on front tyres compared to last year´s, added to the "out of the turn" problem, we have a car more suited to Massa´s drive style (brake inside the turn and going out slowly) than to Fernando (brake at the right time and throttle as soon as possible)"

does it make sense to you ?
