In 2010 Ferrari nearly won a WDC without those people you named, beating McLaren quite comfortably and this year Alonso almost finishes second...

I thought he was almost third. One point behind Webber.

Massa in 2008 with Domenicali and Montezemolo also almost won a championship. So I think the talent is there. Don't get fooled by Newey's momentaneous superiority, that once it's gone Ferrari will be there fighting for wins

They did won WCC in 2008 as well as 2007. To me Massa is moral winner of 2008. Without Briatore and Piquet he might now be a WDC. Who knows. Byrne was still in Ferrari as consultant until early 2009 but I don't know what was he doing there. Newey has a habit to pull something out every year but does he do it alone. It is the crew as you say.

On the other hand Schumi and Brawn are basically doing nothing meaningful at Mercedes. My point is that certain people are very important but you need to gather a nice crew in order to build a winning car, something I don't think Ferrari lacks at the moment. Also, I think I heard rumors about Ferrari getting aero-engineers from RBR..

Good for Ferrari if that is true. But as you say they need a nice crew and I don't quite believe they yet have it. Schumi and Brawn alone does not make a nice team either.

The only serious problem at Ferrari now is Massa...
I don't think Domenicali is bad. The one who should leave Ferrari IMO is Montezemolo.

Why don't they just replace Massa. Surely for example Petrov would be at least as good as Massa. He is a young driver getting better every year.

I don't say Domenicali is bad but is he good. He could be better.

Montezemolo is a pure business man and how much does he get involved into Ferrari's daily operations anyway. Though if he would leave Ferrari I wouldn't mind at all.

Alonso finshed 4rd but during a big part of the championship he's been ranked second and was in contention for it till the last race. Only 12 points behind Button which is very few with today's point system and season length.

I do think Ferrari has a nice team already, I'm sure in 2012 they'll prove this.

I may agree with you about Petrov, I think he'd do better than Massa now, but not really much of a difference. AS much as I like Petrov I'd also go for Perez or KK.

I hope you are right. I just wouldn't bet on Massa doing much better than this year. RBR has anyway been too dominating lately and I wish to see tighter race in 2012.

One ought to be a prophet to see who of the young drivers will do well next year. Ferrari's driver problem could be solved if Kubica makes a full recovery.

If tests go well and Massa doesn't improve Kubica might be in the cockpit even at the mid season.

i think Perez and di Resta would be better bets in the long term.
Specially for a 2nd driver role.

This is good news as long as he's fit. Massa didn't really get back into the swing of things after his knock on the head, and Kubica's accident was a lot worse.

Just think, Kubica would probably be in the Ferrari seat in 2012 if he hadn't been messing about in rally cars.

Massa is completely recovered.
In my opinion, what happens is that he is not adapted to new tires and fuel rules. Plus, Ferrari itself is not fully adapted to it.

Massa qualified 2nd on his return and went on to clinch two podiums in the first two races of 2010. He even found himself in the lead of the championship standings one race later, salvaging points after Ferrari's strategy had resulted in him starting from the back of the grid. That looks like a pretty good recovery to me!
