Re: Vettel To Beat Schumi's Record ?

Post by mnmracer » 10 Oct 2011, 12:06

I have asked iceman1 to update the first post to reflect situation after the Japanese Grand Prix.

Changes in the 'Hunt for the records' after the Japanese Grand Prix
At the 2011 Japanese Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel added 1 pole position, 1 front row start, 17 laps in the lead, 1 podium finish and 15 world championship points to his racing record.

Having not won the race, leading all laps, and not setting the fastest lap, Sebastian Vettel did not become the second driver in history to win the championship with a Grand Slam. He did become the 6th driver in history to become world champion in Suzuka, after Nelso Piquet (1987), Ayrton Senna (1988, 1990, 1991), Alain Prost (1989), Damon Hill (1996), Hakkinen (1998, 1999) and Michael Schumacher (2000, 2003). Although Sebastian Vettel can no longer beat the 2004 record of most wins in a season, when Michael Schumacher drove his Ferrari to 13 race wins, he will still be able to equal the record this year. Vettel will however no longer be able to beat Alberto Ascari’s record of 7 consecutive wins this season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2011 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX STATISTICS
 • For the record books: Sebastian Vettel is now the youngest two-time world champion, just 24 years and 98 days. That is actually just 39 days older than Fernando Alonso was when he took his first championship in 2005.
 • Sebastian Vettel is the 9th driver in history to win back-to-back world championships, after Alberto Ascari (1952-1953), Juan Manuel Fangio (1954-1957), Jack Brabham (1959-1960), Alain Prost (1985-1986) Ayrton Senna (1990-1991), Michael Schumacher (1994-1995, 2000-2004), Mika Häkkinen (1998-1999), Fernando Alonso (2005-2006). Only Fangio and Senna had won championships before winning their back-to-back championships.
 • With Vettel securing the championship, it is the first time since Michael Schumacher in 2003 that the title was won in Japan. He is now the 6th driver in history to become world champion Formula One in Suzuka, after Nelso Piquet (1987), Ayrton Senna (1988, 1990, 1991), Alain Prost (1989), Damon Hill (1996), Hakkinen (1998, 1999) and Michael Schumacher (2000, 2003).
 • Vettel's second world championship is the ninth world championship won by a German driver. Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel now together have more championships than all Brazilian drivers combined (Nelson Piquet (3), Ayrton Senna (3), Emerson Fittipaldi (2)).
 • Michael Schumacher still holds the record for winning the world championship with most races left in the season, with 6 races left in 2002, but securing the title with 4 races left, Sebastian Vettel equals Schumacher's 2004 result. Lest we not forget Mansell however, he clinched the title 5 races before the end in 1992.
 • With the championship won, and no one other than Sebastian Vettel being able to lead the championship anymore, he now holds the record for "leading the championship for most races in the season", leading the championship for all 19 races of 2011. The previous record was held by Michael Schumacher, leading the championship all year through the 18 races in 2004.
 •
 • With Button's win on Suzuka, McLaren has now won 9 of the 27 Japanese Grand Prix since 1976.
 • When Schumacher (42 years, 279 days old) led the race before his last pit stop, he became the old driver to lead a race since Jack Brabham (44 years, 107 days old) led the 1970 British Grand Prix.
 • In his tenth Japanese Grand Prix, this is only the fourth time Mark Webber scored points in Japan; third out of nine races in Suzuka.
 • Button's victory is McLaren's first win at Suzuka since Raïkkönen's win in 2005.
 • Although Force India must be happy to finish, after having a double retirement in the 2008 and 2010 Japanese Grand Prix, they were again unable to score points in Japan.
 • With Perez's eight place finish, Sauber has now consecutively scored points in the last six Japanese Grand Prix, counting both Fuji and Suzuka.
 • The old record for most driver's championship titles entering a race -9 championships equally across Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna in the 1991 Australian Grand Prix- was already shattered when Michael Schumacher brought his 7 championships into the 2010 Australian Grand Prix, starting that race with 11 championship titles. The 2011 Korean Grand Prix will be started with 13 championship titles across the field, but it will be the first time since the 1991 Australian Grand Prix that 3 double world champions will start a race: Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and now Sebastian Vettel.
 • This is Jenson Button's 12th win, 40th podium finish and 6th fastest lap.
 • Fernando Alonso scored his 71st podium finish, slowly creeping up to Ayrton Senna's 80 podium finishes.
 • Sebastian Vettel's 27th pole position, means he is now the all-time 7th driver in most pole positions, clearing himself from Mika Häkkinen, with 26 pole positions. His third place finish in Suzuka meant his 33rd podium finish in his young career: finishing on the podium in 42.8% of his races.
 • Although Sebastian Vettel can no longer beat the 2004 record of most wins in a season, when Michael Schumacher drove his Ferrari to 13 race wins, he will still be able to equal the record.
 • Vettel will no longer be able to beat Alberto Ascari's record of 7 consecutive wins this season.

Since this seems to be the place for the Vettel fans I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions for examples of his raw talent.

I'm talking about a heroic drive to an impressive result a la Button in Canada this year (carving through the field nearly 3 times to take the win). The one that leaps to mind is his first win while he was driving for Toro Rosso but it seems like he did that one handily by just being braver than anybody else (in a subpar car no less).

Sorry if this is an interruption to all the statistical record talk.

The two are not mutually interchangeable.
The fact he (recently) never finds himself in a situation that he needs to carve through the field, in itself is an example of talent. Defining 'raw talent' is a completely different thing, since that is usually considered raw speed, as in, the fact that he has an unrivaled qualifying speed.

Anyways, if you're looking for 'carving through the field' drives from Vettel, you'll have to look back at his time in the 'mid-field at best' Toro Rosso (unlike Button's top McLaren): Japan 2007 (in 2nd place before Hamilton's antics), China 2007 (16 to 4), Monaco 2008 (18 to 5, in Monaco), Canada 2008 (20 to 8), etc., etc., you get the point :O

Since there is some technical delay in getting the first post updated, you can find the updated situation in the 'Hunt for the records' after the Grand Prix of Korea here.

Changes in the 'Vettel's hunt for the records' after the Korean Grand Prix
At the 2011 Korean Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel added 1 front row start, 53 laps in the lead, 1 victory, 1 podium finish, 1 fastest lap and 25 world championship points to his racing record.

When Vettel missed out on pole position, he also missed the chance to tie this year with Ayrton Senna for the record of most consecutive pole positions, which was 8 in between the 1988 Spanish and 1989 United States Grand Prix. By winning, he will still be able to equal Schumacher's season record of 13 race wins in 2002. While the Japanese Grand Prix put a dent in his chances for catching the record for most lap led in a season, and highest percentage of laps led in the season, the 53 laps he led the Korean Grand Prix put him back in the run. He needs just 43 more laps in the lead to beat the overall record of Nigel Mansell in 1992. To beat Jim Clark's 'percentage laps led in a season' record, he will need to get busy though: he must lead all but 27 laps in the next 3 races to beat that record.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2011 KOREAN GRAND PRIX STATISTICS
 • This is Sebastian Vettel's 20th win, 34th podium finish and 8th fastest lap. With 20 wins, he is now ranked 12th in all time driver wins, tied with Mika Häkkinen, while his 8th fastest lap is the same amount as James Hunt, Gilles Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher scored in their careers.
 • Lewis Hamilton scored his 19th pole position and his 40th podium finish, with which he has now caught up to Jenson Button. His 19th pole position ranks him 13th on the all-time pole position list.
 • Mark Webber scored his 29th podium finish, clearing him from Ralf Schumacher and now having the same amount of podiums as Clay Regazzoni.
 •
 • In 1992, Nigel Mansell scored a by then unbelievable 9 race wins in one season, which was equaled only by Michael Schumacher 3 years later in 1995. Only Ayrton Senna came close before that, with 8 wins in 1988. Of course we all remember what Schumacher did in 2002 (11 wins) and 2004 (13 wins). With Vettel's 10th season victory, there are now only two drivers in Formula One history to have scored more than 9 wins in one season, and both are German.
 • Leading for all but two of the laps in Korea, Sebastian Vettel has now led 651 of the 947 laps in the 2011 season. This is 5 more than Michael Schumacher in the complete 1994 season (which had 1046 laps), and creeps him up to Nigel Mansells 694 laps led record in 1992.
 • With Red Bull winning their second constructor's championship, they have become 8th team in history to win more than 1 constructor's title, having the same amount of titles as Cooper, Brabham and Renault.
 • Finishing in seventh, Jaime Alguersuari equalled his career best result. With team mate Sebastien Buemi finishing two places behind him in ninth, this is the best team result of Toro Rosso since the Australian Grand Prix in 2009, where Buemi finished seventh and Sebastien Bourdais finished eigth.
 • McLaren celebrated their team's 700th Grand Prix start in Korea. Only Ferrari has been arond for longer, with 828 Grand Prix starts.
 • In those 700 Grand Prix's, McLaren won 174 races (24.9%), set 147 pole positions (21.0%), set 148 fastest laps (21.1%) and finished on the podium with at least one car in 376 races (53.7%).
 •
 • With all the calculators in Maranello being used to design a championship-winning car for next year, Ferrari decided to celebrate what they thought was Felipe Massa's 150th Grand Prix start, in the wrong race. Felipe packed his helmet for 151 Grand Prix (entries), but only started 149 of them, not starting the 2005 United States Grand Prix in his Michelin Sauber, or in the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix after losing a game of dare with a spring coming from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn car.
 • Lewis Hamilton scored his first pole position since last year's Canadian Grand Prix, being the first non-Red Bull driver since Nico Hülkenberg in last year's Brazilian Grand Prix to train on pole position.
 • This ended Red Bull's streak of 16 consecutive pole positions, the third longest streak of consecutive pole positions by a team in history, after Williams' 24 poles from the 1992 French Grand Prix to the 1993 Japanese Grand Prix, and McLaren's 17 poles from the 1988 German Grand Prix to the 1989 German Grand Prix.

Hey guys, sorry for being gone.
But here's the update after India ;)

Vettel's hunt for the records after the Indian Grand Prix
At the 2011 Indian Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel added 1 pole position, 1 front row start, 60 laps in the lead, 1 victory, 1 podium finish, 1 fastest lap, 1 Grand Chelem, 1 win from pole position and 25 world championship points to his racing record.

With this perfect weekend, Vettel has already secured a number of records, and kept him in the running for a few more.
 • Aged 24 years and 119 days, Sebastian Vettel is the youngest driver in Formula One history to achieve a Grand Chelem: winning the race from pole position, leading every lap of the race and setting the fastest lap. The previous record holder was Ayrton Senna, who was 25 years and 10 days when he achieved a Grand Chelem at the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix.
 • In lap 42 (or 44, depending if you count leading on track or in time at the French GP), Sebastian Vettel surpassed Nigel Mansell with most laps led in a season. Nige lead for 694 (or 692) laps in 1992, with Vettel now having led 711 laps thus far in the 2011 season.
 • Taking his 9th race win from pole position in one season, he equaled Nigel Mansell's 1992 record. He has 2 more races to make it his own.
 • With his 16th front row start of the season, Vettel now shares the record for 'most front row starts in a season' with Ayrton Senna (1989), Alain Prost (1993) and Damon Hill (1996).
 • With Vettel taking the 16th pole position of the season for Red Bull, Red Bull now holds the team record of most pole positions in one season.
 • While the 25-points-per-win system has kind of screwed up the 'most points in a season'-record, Sebastian Vettel now holds that record under the 2004 points system. Under that points system, Vettel would now have 153 points (in 17 races), against Michael Schumacher's 148 points (out of 18 races).
 • Counting in race wins, Vettel now also beat Schumacher's 2004 record of 14.8 race wins (148/10 points per win). His 374 points, now equals 14.96 race wins (374/25 points per win).
 • By winning, Vettel will still be able to equal Schumacher's season record of 13 race wins in 2002. With two races to go and 13 pole positions, Vettel is in a good position to at least equal, and possibly beat Nigel Mansell's 1992 record for most pole positions in a season. Likewise, with two races to go and 16 podium finishes, Vettel is in a good position to at least equal, and possibly beat Michael Schumacher's 2002 record for most podium finishes in a season. He's also well on his way to also beat Jim Clark's 1963 'percentage laps led in a season' record, but it won't come easy: he must lead all but 27 laps in Abu Dhabi and Brazil to beat that record. Vettel needs just 29 more points to have the highest percentage of possible points in a season. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2011 INDIAN GRAND PRIX STATISTICS
• This is Sebastian Vettel's 28th pole position, 21st win, 16th win from pole position, 35th podium finish, 9th fastest lap, and 1st Grand Chelem. Sebastian Vettel is the 22th driver in history to achieve a Grand Chelem, and this is the 51st Grand Chelem in history. With his 16th win from pole position, he has now cleared himself from Jim Clark, ranking 5th on that all-time list. With 21 wins, he is now ranked 11th in all time driver wins, while his 9th fastest lap is the same amount as Denny Hulme, Ronnie Peterson and Jacques Villeneuve scored in their careers.
 • Jenson Button scored his 41st podium finish, with which he has now cleared himself from Lewis Hamilton again.
 • Fernando Alonso scored his 72nd podium finish.
 • You might not have realised, but McLaren has now secure second place in the constructors' championship. With 442 points to Ferrari's 325, and only 86 constructors' points left in the season, the Woking team has assured themselves of start numbers 3 and 4 in 2012
 • Although Felipe Massa celebrated his 150th Grand Prix start one race early, the 2011 Indian Grand Prix actually marked this event. Unfortunately he did not finish his 150th race.
 • While some could argue if Lewis Hamilton's grid penalty for cutting the chicane could be considered a penalty, his grid penalty for ignoring the yellow flags definitely makes 2011 his penalty record season: now 7 (or 6).
 •
 • Vettel's Grand Chelem at the inaugral Indian Grand Prix was the 10th Grand Chelem at an inaugral Grand Prix, the first one in 35 years. This after Monaco 1950 (Juan Manel Fangio), Rouen 1952 (Alberto Ascari), Zandvoort 1952 (Alberto Ascari), Argentina 1953 (Alberto Ascari), Monsanto 1959 (Stirling Moss), Brands Hatch 1964 (Jim Clark), Clermont-Ferrand 1965 (Jim Clark), Paul Ricard 1971 (Jackie Stewart) and Long Beach 1976 (Clay Regazzoni).
 • India became the 30th country to ever host a Formula One Grand Prix. In the 2011 Formula One season, there are now races in three of the five most populated countries of the world: China (1.3 billion), India (1.2 billion) and Brazil (196 million). Next year, the United States (313 million) joins that list, leaving only Indonesia (242 million).

Nah, just a big (and expanding) database of statistics I keep, and some random trivia I find around the web.

I think Vettel is a very good driver and he'll give us a lot of excitement also in the future. But I think beating Schumacher is gonna be hard... Specially if we take into account that there are a lot of very talented drivers already in F1 (6 world champions I heard we'll have next year :P) that will surely make Vette's life on track very difficult. And let's not forget RBR may suffer probably a downfall of performance (as happened also to teams like Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, etc...) which may slow down drastically Vettel's new achievements.

I remember this very thing was said also about Alonso, Kimi, Hamilton, etc, when they were winning championships ("the new Schumachers", etc).

Said this, I think It is still possible for Vettel to break those records or get very close to Schumacher. He has the talent there no doubt.

We were just discussing about the 13 Wins in a season record for Seb. No one knows whats gonna happen in the future with more breed of talented drivers already on the grid & some drivers still waiting for an oppurtunity to jump to top teams.

Its all over for Seb this season & he'll have to try next season to beat schumis record. Assuming he fisnihes today's race in 1st I think he will be second to schumacher for the max no 1's in a season.
