Alonso travelled to Italy to see him already over night.

Kubica could be sidelined for 2011
By Jonathan Noble and Michele Lostia Sunday, February 6th 2011, 22:10 GMT

Robert Kubica could be out of action for the whole of the 2011 Formula 1 season as a result of the serious injuries he sustained in his rally crash on Sunday, medical staff have said.

The Renault driver underwent a seven-hour operation earlier today at the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure following his accident on the opening stage of the Ronde di Andora rally.

He had lost control of his Super 2000 Skoda Fabia just a few kilometres into the event and crashed into a wall. The impact resulted in a length of crash barrier penetrating the cockpit of the car and hitting Kubica, badly injuring the right-hand side of his body.

As well as multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand, of more immediate concern was his partially severed right hand.

There were fears that the hand may have had to be amputated, but doctors managed to reattach the blood supply during a lengthy operation and are hoping the repair will be successful.

Doctor Igor Rossello, who is a hand specialist, told local media on Sunday night that it would take several days for doctors to assess the success of the operation - and warned that Kubica could need up to one year to recover.

"We need to wait for a week at least to verify whether the hand survives," Dr Rossello was quoted as saying by Italian media. "The nerve lesions are the ones that leave us with the most question marks over the recovery of functions.

"Rehabilitation will be relatively long, probably one year. He came here with multiple traumas, with several associated injuries. He won't necessarily have to undergo further surgery on the hand, but he will if needed."

Dr Rossello said that he expected it would take at least 12 months before Kubica would be able to drive an F1 car again - although he admitted racing drivers often recovered from injury far quicker than predicted.

When asked what the best prediction for Kubica to be back racing, he said: "One year is the best provision.

"I think it is quite difficult now, but you never know. Drivers are always very special patients. I have a lot of motorbike patients and they heal in a much faster way - faster than normal people."

I wish Robert a speedy recovery from his injuries, and I hope to see him back in F1 sooner rather than later (once he has healed).

François wrote:Terrible, terrible news. I'm relieved that he's out of danger, but it seems like tough times lie ahead... I'm no hand specialist, so I can only wish and hope that the speed and wholeness of his recovery even blows away Pr. Rossello, who I don't doubt for a second took the best possible care of his patient.

As for the Captain Hindsight wannabes criticizing him and Renault for allowing that to happen in the first place, please make some sense. Firstly, 2010 was probably the season where Kubica delivered his best driving thus far, and you can't put that down to sheer ability: he's clearly been very happy at Renault, and the fact they didn't make a fuss about his rallies has definitely played a part. Secondly, even though there's no denying that rallying *is* dangerous, there's a lot of other ways to injure yourself! Just remember how Mark Webber nearly missed the start of 2009 due to a mountain bike fall. It only takes a bit of bad luck: even something as commonplace (sadly) as a road accident can cause worse injuries than Robert's, it's actually much easier to hurt yourself this way since the safety standards for rally cars are very high. F1 drivers are human beings, fitter than the norm but as vulnerable as you and me; they are also grown men, capable of making their own decisions and knowing what is best for them. So don't be too harsh with Robert and Renault, it's all too easy to judge things in hindsight.

Ok you won the argument. I have to agree with you!

on a sidenote: Lewis Hamilton has probably found the best way to activate his happiness hormones, by shagging Nicole Sherzinger

No need for Rallye or diving with White Sharks.

The latest reports are optimistic (albeit cautiously so) about his reaction to the emercency surgery that Kubica underwent yesterday. More surgery will apparently be required, and not just on his hand.

Candidates to replace Kubica
- Bruno Senna (Renault 3rd driver)
- Romain Grosjean (Renault 4th driver)
- Nick Heidfeld
- Anthony Davidson
- Pedro De La Rosa
- Vitantonio Liuzzi

Many more. I'd put money on it being Senna if its just a few races missed, but Heidfeld if it's going to be the whole season

Hopefully not Heidfeld again. F1 needs some new blood. He has been around for 11 years...and never won anything. Next please.

Very, very scary pictures there, phil. A few centimeters to the right or left and he or his co-driver would have been impaled.

Whoever takes up his seat will come under huge pressure to perform rapidly. With his 2010 comeback, Heidfeld has shown he's very quick to adapt to a new car, as well as a fast and reliable driver; he's also free of any commitments at the moment. Renault had high expectations for 2011, they can't afford a slow start to the season; an experienced and consistent chap is their best bet.

Good to see that driver stopping and helping a fellow racer.

This is the onboard from the car following Kubica's, it was the first car to arrive at the scene.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALbxMiwf ... r_embedded

Check out how narrow the road is and how many lethal looking obstacles there are right on the edge of the road. Scary stuff really.

I can't see any obvious skids and no wreckage at the last slight right-hander before the crash scene. Racing line would have taken him to the side where the car ended up. The armco looks damaged ahead of where he ended up. Looks like he might have just gone a tiny bit too far to the right, down off the edge into the armco, but the armco dug into the car and spun it around (hence facing the other way). When the car drives ahead and parks you can see some wreckage on the road - a fair way ahead so he must have been motoring when he hit.

On who will replace Kubica, apparently the seat is up to the highest bidder.
