F1: Kubica Out Of Surgery As Wait Begins

Robert Kubica's hand surgery is complete...

Robert Kubica has completed a seven hour operation under Italian hand surgery specialist Prof Igor Rossello, but it will be some time before his true condition becomes clear.

“We have to wait at least a week to see if his hand survives,” Rossello told Italian media, referring to the likelihood of a return to full functionality. He also added that it could take a year for the Pole to be able to use his right arm again.

Rossello, a specialist from the nearly San Paulo Hospital in Savona, was joined by Renault’s own doctor, Riccardo Ceccarelli.

Kubica underwent bone reconstruction before the doctors attended to tissue and nerve damage, while a separate team worked on his injured right leg.

Robert Kubica has completed a seven hour operation under Italian hand surgery specialist Prof Igor Rossello, but it will be some time before his true condition becomes clear.

“Robert Kubica underwent a seven-hour operation at the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure this afternoon.

“The Lotus Renault GP driver had been diagnosed with multiple fractures to his right arm and leg following a high-speed accident at the Ronda de Andora rally this morning. He also suffered severe cuts to his forearm, which could have an impact on his right hand mobility.

“Doctors are reasonably satisfied with the way the operation went. Tonight, Robert’s condition remains stable but serious. He has been placed into an induced coma and could be woken up in the morning.

“Professor Mario Igor Rossello, Director for the Regional Centre of Hand Surgery at San Paolo Hospital in Savona: ‘It has been a very important and difficult operation. Robert Kubica’s right forearm was cut in two places, with significant lesions to the bones and the tendons. We did our best to rebuild the functions of the forearm.

‘It took seven doctors, split into two teams and a total of seven hours to complete the operation. One team was the emergency task force from the hospital of San Paolo (Savona) that is normally appointed to treat this sort of injury, while the other team came from the orthopaedic department of the Santa Corona Hospital (Pietra Ligure).

‘At the end of the operation, Robert’s hand was well vascularised and warm, which is encouraging. Following the surgery, Robert Kubica will remain under permanent monitoring overnight because his condition remains serious.’

“Eric Boullier, Team Principal and Managing Director of Lotus Renault GP: ‘The news of Robert’s accident came as a real shock to the whole team. All of us, at Lotus Renault GP, wish him a quick recovery.

‘We have been really impressed with the way the doctors looked after him today and we would like to thank the whole team of the Santa Corona Hospital for their professional approach and dedication.

‘I will be travelling to Italy tomorrow, along with Vitaly Petrov, in order to see Robert and tell him that we are impatiently waiting for his return.’

“Another update will be made tomorrow morning at 9h30, at the hospital, by Professor Rossello and Daniel Morelli, Robert’s manager.”

so sad about the accident. He is lucky to bee alive but must say he was very unlucky in that accident hoping him a good recovery and that he can continue racing in the future

Kubica's co-driver Jakub Gerber emerged uninjured from the accident, and said he did not know what had caused the Pole to go off the road.

"We were on the first four kilometres of the first special stage. I was looking at the notes and didn't notice that the car was skidding," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "Only when we crashed I saw Robert holding his arm, and after a few moments he lost consciousness.

"Robert isn't just a great driver, he is a friend. I just hope he can recover soon."

Renault team principal Eric Boullier defended the decision to let Kubica keep rallying during the vital build-up period to the new F1 season, even though that decision now appears to have left his team without its lead driver for the year ahead.

"Robert is a person we love dearly: we are extremely sad and obviously shocked," he told the Il Vostro Giornale. "Whether it's a Lotus, a Renault or a Skoda it doesn't make any difference: it's nothing to do with business.

"We've let him do it because rallying is what he loves to do. Rallying is vital for Robert and for his sanity. Besides that, there is a reciprocal agreement. We knew the risks and so did he. We didn't want a robot or a corporate man for a driver."

yeah, me too.... he put things into perspective .... have had a little hard time reading how many hypocrites thinks that a racing driver is a robot and you should deny every sort of motorsport (and everything else) from him because he is a F1 driver....

but Kubica is a racer and a dearly hope that he will recover so that he can race again because that is the thing he loves in life....

Robert Kubica’s manager Daniele Morelli has been able to talk to the Pole this morning, following his lengthy operation last night.

Kubica was kept in an articially induced coma overnight.

“I finally talked and Robert has been shown to understand everything perfectly,” he was quoted as saying in the Italian media. “His mental capacities are intact and we are extremely relieved. This really leaves us hope. Obviously he feels a lot of pain in his leg and hand. It will take time. “

according to the following twitter, Kubica is feeling pain in his hand. the news is very sad and I deeply feel sorry for him,
but at the same time I think this is a good sign of his recovery I maybe wrong, but if the hand will not function,
he does not feel the pain I think. he should feel his arm nor hand is not there if it went wrong! I know it's too early to judge,
but at least I think this is positive thing to know. surely his rehub will take a long hard time and way, but wish him back behind
a wheel of a car.

that sounds as positive news to me atleas! It of course will take time and maybe he has to undergo more surgeries to get everything working but that he is awaik, clear in his head and feels pain in his arm and foot is definitely good news!

So sorry for Kubica, I was waiting him to be the one who surprises this year..I hope mental strenght for him to cope with this,as he is the one of the pure racers along Kimi I have ever seen.
About the hand pain..they talk about the "chost pain" with the persons that have lost their arm or leg. I think we will see it after few days as the doctors say. To me the better sign is the hand is warm.
