David Croft: Have spoken to Eric Boullier who says Robert lost a lot of blood in his hand but ruled out amputation. Operation has gone well so far though

Renault have confirmed that Kubica's hand will not be amputated and that it's unlikely he will be fit for Bahrain. #F1
Kubica is currently still in surgery. Whether he can actually regain use of his hand is unknown, and will not be determined immediately. #F1

Here's my take on the candidates who spring to mind as replacements for the oh so infortunate Robert Kubica
Fairuz Fauzy - He's useless. Fans of football will remember how the son of Libyan leader Colonel Gadaffi signed with several Serie A clubs because his Dad was rich. The fact he had the footballing talent of a sunday league footballer was sen as irrelevant. Faizy has progressed through money alone, and would rival Luca Badoer in terms of performance.
Romain Grosjean - If Renault has any of its French soul left, they'd plump for the talented Grosjean. But Grosjean, for all his talent, has performed scruffily in an ever weakening GP2 and at Renault performed worse than Nelson Piquet in 2009 under admittedly tough circumstances. His propensity for spins and crashes means that a team of Petrov and Grosjean would bankrupt the team with repair bills. Unlikely to happen.
Bruno Senna - If Renault want to plump for a guy to attract the sponsors, this is the man they'll sign. Difficult to gauge his performances in 2010, but the fact he was comfortably beaten by Christian Klien will not have impressed future employers. Nonetheless his F1 experience and surname make him a plausible candidate.
Tonio Liuzzi - Performed solidly if underwhelmingly at Force India last year, his record in junior formula is outstanding and this has meant his solid F1 career has appeared disappointing by comparison. He would be a solid choice who can be mostly trusted to bring a car home, and has the benefit of being currently unemployed.
Nico Hulkenburg - Unlucky to be sacked from Williams after an admittedly patchy 2010 season, though his qualifying lap in Brazil showed his talent. Got all the credentials to be a F1 star, and has in Willi Weber the premier agent in F1. Whether Hulkenburg decides to test for Mercedes and hope Schumi retires, or decides to go for the race drive at Renault remains to be seen.
Nick Heidfeld - You know what you get with Nick (on the track at least). He's displayed solid pace and a lot of consistency in his career, though never the luck or blinding speed needed to win GP's. Outpaced by Kobayashi at Sauber, he still performed solidly having had not testing with the car. Probably the favourite for the drive, and certainly the most solid and predictable candidate.
Pedro de la Rosa - Sacked mid-season at Sauber after being out-performed by Kobayashi, he can be trusted to bring a car home but won't do so with much speed. At age 40, it would be remarkable to see him back in F1. Can't see it myself, though does bring lots of Spanish sponsors.

Morelli says Kubica will make a full recovery - 6 months at the earliest. That's the Belgian GP.

Kubica recovery will take a year
"We have to wait at least a week to see if his hand survives. " This is the first comment of Professor Igor Rossello after the operation that led right limb of Robert Kubica Hospital Santa Corona. At best, the twenty-six pilot Lotus Renault will again use his right arm only in one year. The limb has undergone a delicate operation to implant bone reconstruction, and reconnection of tissue vascularization.
The operation lasted over seven hours, performed by the team of Professor Rossello, a specialist in hand surgery center of San Paolo di Savona. In the operating room even Dr. Riccardo Ceccarelli, the team doctor of Kubica. The motorist will remain in hospital in Pietra Ligure long, presumably, while the prognosis remains reserved for a week. In the coming days the doctors will assess the conditions of vascularization of the hand and right arm of the runner

Kubica could be sidelined for 2011.
Robert Kubica could be out of action for the whole of the 2011 Formula 1 season as a result of the serious injuries he sustained in his rally crash on Sunday, medical staff have said.

Terrible, terrible news. I'm relieved that he's out of danger, but it seems like tough times lie ahead... I'm no hand specialist, so I can only wish and hope that the speed and wholeness of his recovery even blows away Pr. Rossello, who I don't doubt for a second took the best possible care of his patient.
As for the Captain Hindsight wannabes criticizing him and Renault for allowing that to happen in the first place, please make some sense. Firstly, 2010 was probably the season where Kubica delivered his best driving thus far, and you can't put that down to sheer ability: he's clearly been very happy at Renault, and the fact they didn't make a fuss about his rallies has definitely played a part. Secondly, even though there's no denying that rallying *is* dangerous, there's a lot of other ways to injure yourself! Just remember how Mark Webber nearly missed the start of 2009 due to a mountain bike fall. It only takes a bit of bad luck: even something as commonplace (sadly) as a road accident can cause worse injuries than Robert's, it's actually much easier to hurt yourself this way since the safety standards for rally cars are very high. F1 drivers are human beings, fitter than the norm but as vulnerable as you and me; they are also grown men, capable of making their own decisions and knowing what is best for them. So don't be too harsh with Robert and Renault, it's all too easy to judge things in hindsight.
