The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is set to confirm by the middle of next month whether it has secured a new deal with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to continue to hold the US Grand Prix from 2008 and beyond.

Ecclestone and IMS CEO Tony George have been in talks this weekend about extending the current contract which ends after Sunday’s race.

IMS President Joie Chitwood announced on Saturday that both parties are looking at ways to secure a new long-term deal from next season and he is confident a decision will be made within the next month.

"Tony has stressed to Bernie in these meetings that we want to continue the event, and we believe he feels the same," Chitwood said.

"With eight years experience with the USGP, both Tony and Bernie know what the challenges are.

“They are exploring ways to get to a long-term agreement, and we expect to make an announcement no later than July 12.

"If we are going to have a USGP in 2008, we know that we need to make the announcement and start working on the event by the second week of July.

He added that the Speedway was keen to further increase the event’s success: "With the Indianapolis 500, we annually present the world's largest sporting event and also play host to the largest-attended NASCAR race with the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.

"We just need to continue to work with the Formula 1 community and find the right business model to make this event successful for all involved. That is our goal."

The future of F1 in America had been in serious doubt back in 2005 following the Michelin tyre debacle, which forced only six Bridgestone-shod cars to take part in the race.

However interest was revived last year when attendances for the race climbed above 100,000, a success which was soon followed by the confirmation that Indianapolis had secured a one-year contract extension to cover this year’s race.

But earlier this week the grand prix's long-term future was thrown in to fresh doubt when Ecclestone said that it was not vital for F1 to have a race in the United States.

He then told Reuters on Saturday that the IMS was not doing enough to promote the event.

"They haven't done anything to really get behind it have they?" Ecclestone told the news agency.

"We arrive in town, what do we get? We get banners saying the Indy 500.

"Not really the way to promote Formula 1.

"They haven't got behind it, full stop."

So is Indy staying, or not. Bernie's just contradicting himself saying he wants it to stay and then that its not vital.

I've already said this in another topic but with F1 seeming to be starting to ncrack the US market through Hamilton surely F1 should stay there for now.

I would like to see a USGP, but not necessarily at Indy.

Actually yer, Would love to see some more street racing, Las Vegas, Dallas, Detroit, like in the old days

I dont know, I like the whole Indy Motorsport history thing they do in Indiana for the speedway but i've never really been a huge Indy fan. I would like to see a road course in its place maybe N.Y or Detroit or Phoenix even Atlanta would be nice. I kinda feel like bernie is always tryng to test the water first and see what happens with Indy. AS LONG AS THE U.S HAS AT LEAST ONE RACE I WILL BE HAPPY..

i like the indianapolis circuit, i think it makes it tricky enough for the drivers and, with exception to 2005, the races are exciting!

i think it should stay, i just dont think there needs to be another american grand prix!

It's just hairpin folled by hairpin till a big straight is eventually reached. It definatly doesn't deserve to stay when there are so man good American tracks. Why not go to Road America or Watkins Glen

OK the track wasn't that great, but it was different to the Tilkedromes and it has given us great battles the years it's been on the calendar... in 5 years we won't know the meaning of the word "overtake" :roll:

I can't say I'm not glad to see it go, couldn't really stand the Indy track bored me... Plus I think its only fair with the speculation of another American GP the current one should go, Europe shouldn't lose out because Bernie wants more money and exposure...

Hopefully. I hope they have a wide street circuit. Something where overtaking is possible, but with the street circuit environment. That would be cool !cool!!!!
