Why are they assuming he has signed for mini because his team is looking for a new driver in France, those two things don't exclude each other, or? My logic says that he has got a new chance to drive a ford i France.... His prime target for next year was Ford and mini was his b-plan and he said he was ready to give upp his SWRC drive this year to get the ford set next year... and Fords extra seat seems to be wide open or am i missing the point? They have in the last rallys tested atleast PG, Duval and ostberg...

yeah, i know that the totalrally-guys are drolling after Petter or Sordo in the ford seat almost as much they dream about Ogier... and they see this as a sign :O

Petter does not want the Mini-seat

A factory seat in the BMW-owned Mini next season is out of the question for Petter Solberg (35).

Norwegian's old team, Prodrive, makes a comeback in the Rally Championship next season with the Mini. However, full commitment and participation in all World Cup rounds are not applicable until 2012.

- For me it is the full package or nothing next year. It is interesting to go into a project like this, "said Petter Solberg said.

Several other automakers have started their own projects to join the rally tomorrow's World Cup, where the so-called S2000 class takes over.

Next year's cars being performance-tuned, 1.6-liter turbo engines (modern WRC, 2-liter turbocharged). The cars are faster than standard cars in the Group N class. The aim is to reduce costs in the Rally World Championship.

After the NTB experience, has at least one of next year's factory team has been in contact with his little brother Solberg.

The alternative is to gather new tens of million in sponsorship to the table and run on your own private team, so Petter Solberg has done over the last two seasons.

It is approaching five years ago, Petter Solberg won the World Cup round in the last rally. This year, there were two different and two third places as the best.

wrcisfree said that there is a rumor that citroen have hinted Petter that there is a big possibility that they are going to have a car ready in the beginning of the season even for him if he wants to buy one... and with that rumor about Novicov? (him testing the citroen and considering to buy one) it doesn't sound that citroen are going to have a problem to produce the four cars to their factory drivers...

2 car entry for Petter's team in France apparently!
thats interesting to see who the other guy is... Duval or some completely new guy we never heard of earlier... Wow, there is going to be 6 citroens on asphalt in France.

Petter is probably doing it to finance the last competitions of the year. Maybe two entries in spain also? He has two cars and he doesn't do anything with them in the end of the season... so why not.

Tweet from @Evan_Rothman

The name Yvan Muller is strongly linked to second P.Solberg WRT car. Muller has contested Dakar before. WRC France is very different though.

Michelin bids for WRC return

Image

Michelin's competitions director Nick Shorrock has revealed to AUTOSPORT that the French firm is bidding to return to the World Rally Championship for the first time since 2005.

Michelin departed the WRC at the end of that year, rebranding its headline rally involvement as BF Goodrich for the following two seasons, before Pirelli was awarded a sole-supplier contract from 2008 until the end of this season.

After weeks of speculation, Shorrock confirmed Michelin has contacted the FIA to make the governing body aware of its desire to supply tyres to the WRC. The deadline for tyre companies letting the FIA know they are interested in supplying the teams is today.

Shorrock said: "There's a process involved with the FIA and the first part of that process is to inform the FIA that we want to supply tyres. We have done that and I can confirm it is Michelin [not BF Goodrich] which we hope will be competing in the WRC.

"Now we have to wait until September 13, when the FIA will let us know the tyre companies which are to be permitted to supply tyres. And then we have to find out if anybody wants to run with our tyres."

Peugeot Sport driver Stephane Sarrazin was reported to be testing Michelin's WRC tyres in the South of France earlier this week, using a Peugeot 307 WRC as a test car. AUTOSPORT contacted Sarrazin, who confirmed he was at the test, but was unable to discuss anything else.

Michelin has maintained a rally presence since departing the WRC, running with the BF Goodrich brand in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge since 2007.

Current WRC tyre supplier Pirelli has not yet made clear whether it will seek to retain a position in the series it has served exclusively for the past three years. A spokesman from Pirelli said: "Pirelli is still considering its options. We will let you know our decision as soon as possible."

One senior team principal said: "It's great news that Michelin wants to be involved again, but you have to ask if this is the right time for open competition again - and, frankly, it's not.

"Pirelli made a perfect offer to the FIA last year and it should have been accepted. It was common sense to take Pirelli for another three years - that would have seen us through the remainder of the storm and then bring competition back, when the sport's back to its best again."

Solberg last resort - Ford?

Petter Solberg has to choose. Will the Norwegians in 2011 in a new WRC sitting on a return to Ford is almost inevitable penalty of the Off.

According to the statement of Citroen Sport boss Olivier Quesnel, have spent the season starts four ready-DS3 2011 WRC should be met with Petter Solberg on little enthusiasm.
Now it was clear that besides the two works drivers Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier, only the Citroen-Junior Team - Dani Sordo and Kimi Raikkonen are still unconfirmed - come to enjoy the new technology from France. Precious Citroen privateer Solberg must look around for alternatives. Real choice, the Norwegians, however. He will only return to Ford, or early career end.
Although the relationship between M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson and Solberg applied since the short-term departure to Subaru as biased, both sides seem to come back slowly closer. Wilson desperately needs another fast driver in order to remain competitive against Citroen. Solberg would obtain a current work car and possibly his last big contract in the World Cup. Moreover, one is meanwhile no longer agree only outside the Ford service area, it would do good for the team if, in addition to the rather pale Ford Finns Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala a bird of paradise as Petter Solberg would ensure more attention.

Michelin interested in supplying tyres to WRC
French tyre manufacturer Michelin has expressed a desire to return to the WRC in 2011, according to autosport.com.

Michelin has contacted the FIA regarding its intention to supply tyres for WRC teams next year. The FIA will announce which tyre companies will be able to supply WRC teams on 13th September.

Michelin's competitions director Nick Shorrock told autosport.com: "There's a process involved with the FIA and the first part of that process is to inform the FIA that we want to supply tyres. Meeke signs for Mini WRC programme

Kris Meeke has signed to drive for Mini in the World Rally Championship next year, this week's AUTOSPORT magazine reveals.

Reigning Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion Meeke denied any deal had been done with the Prodrive team that will run Mini's WRC return, but AUTOSPORT understands that an agreement is in place.

A source close to Prodrive said: "The deal with Kris is done. [Prodrive chairman] David Richards has talked a great deal about having a British driver and he's been as good as his word."

Meeke said: "My focus remains on this year and winning rallies with Peugeot."

Peugeot UK is known to have contacted drivers about replacing Meeke in its IRC programme for next season.

AUTOSPORT has learned that double WRC champion Marcus Gronholm will test the new Mini Countryman WRC for the first time in Portugal next week, after which he is set to decide whether he will sign for the team.

Former Junior champion and Suzuki WRC driver P-G Andersson also has an offer from Mini for 2011.

wow, if Meeks has sign with Mini and leaves the citroen/peugeot company... his plan a was to get a full season in WRC (in citroen). So apparently he s quite shore that citroens future plans doesn't include him. And same with PG and ford (even if I dont get the logic about PG not driving this season in WRC if he gets a deal for mini to next season)

Petter to ford -> everybody seem to think its the best rational option to both of them but nobody thinks its going to happen because their history ...

Pirelli confirms WRC exit

Pirelli has elected to turn its back on the World Rally Championship next year in a move that will see it concentrate its efforts on Formula 1, AUTOSPORT has learned.

The Italian tyre company won the battle to secure the supply deal for F1 next year, and it has already begun testing its rubber on a Toyota TF109.

Despite its return to F1, Pirelli had been expected to remain in the World Rally Championship.

However, AUTOSPORT has learned that it did not submit an application to the FIA to supply tyres to the WRC in 2011 before last night's deadline, citing the lack of rule stability in the series as the reason for its withdrawal.

Pirelli has supplied the WRC with a control tyre for the last three years in an €11.5m investment with the sport's governing body, the FIA.

For next season, however, Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery says the firm will focus its attentions on Formula 1.

"The first point to make here is the way the rules have been changed," Hembery told AUTOSPORT. "There have been three significant rule changes in the last nine months - and, possibly, an even more significant change coming in 2012.

"In December we tendered for another three-year deal to supply tyres for WRC. Once again, our tender was set out to provide finance for continued investment in the FIA, in the sport's promoter and, of course in the Pirelli Star Driver scheme which we financed from its inception in 2008.

"That three-year tender was rejected and we were offered a one-year extension on the same terms as the current three-year deal, then a one-year deal on the new tender conditions - that was something we felt was unacceptable.

"And now we come to the current regulation, which we feel is neither a control tyre scenario or competition. And, based on the experiences we have had in GT racing, where regulations similar to those in the WRC were open to interpretation and were flexible if a [tyre] manufacturer was having some difficulties. We explained those issues [to the FIA] and we have had no significant response. These rules leave a lot to be desired and we have communicated these limitations to the FIA.

"Overall it just feels that we were not wanted in the sport despite delivering run-flat technology, a Tarmac-specification tyre [which is] fully EEC road homologated, an offer to bring self-sealing, puncture-resistance to the sport, aromatic oil-free tyres and, of course, a level puncture resistance that was unheard of before 2008. We leave the sport with our head held high, having supported the series through some of the most difficult economic conditions ever experienced."

Hembery said Pirelli would continue to be involved in rallying, adding: "We have always been involved in the sport and we will continue to do so. We will remain in national championships and we will also look at the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, where we can have proper competition.

"We won the Monte Carlo Rally, the opening IRC round, this season with one car against a rival with many cars – so we know we can be competitive."

Rally Sweden to include Norwegian stages

By Giles Wade

The forests around Kongsvinger will once again reverberate to the sound of the World Rally Car following Rally Sweden’s decision to spend the first day of their event in Norway next February.

The Rally Sweden and Rally Norway organisers have always worked closely together and, when Norway failed to make it to the 2011 calendar, the idea was raised of running a day of the WRC season opener across the border in Norway. Rally Sweden clerk of the course Bertil Klarin has confirmed the plan and the WRC’s first full day’s competition next season will be on the Kongsvinger stages.

With Norway not being part of the European Union, the service park will remain in Sweden, to save the teams having to send vans and personnel across the border.

Klarin said: “This is something we were thinking about for some time. The roads around Kongsvinger are very nice and, of course, this opens our event to a lot more spectators in Norway. Unfortunately, now that Rally Norway no longer really exists, we have to do the marketing ourselves. But it will be very worthwhile.”

The Saturday and Sunday of Rally Sweden remain similar to last season, running north from the event’s Karlstad base out of the town of Hagfors.

Gronholm to test for Mini
2 Sep 10

Image

Two-time World Champion Marcus Gronholm will make a return to the wheel of a Prodrive-run rally car for the first time in over a year, when he tests the new Mini Countryman WRC in Portugal next week.

The eagerly-anticipated car had an initial shakedown test at the British firm’s proving ground in Warwick this week, but the forthcoming Portugal test marks the first serious running that the Mini will carry out on gravel.

Having met with Prodrive last month to discuss the project, the 42-year-old Gronholm agreed to drive the car for its initial tests before taking any long-term decisions about his future.

Since retiring at the end of 2007 after two titles with Peugeot and two seasons with Ford, Gronholm has constantly debated whether or not he should return to the sport full-time. In 2009 he drove a Subaru Impreza WRC run by Prodrive in a one-off outing on the Rally of Portugal, having come close to agreeing terms to complete a full season before Subaru unexpectedly pulled the plug on rallying at the end of 2008.

This year, he drove a privately-run Ford Focus WRC in Sweden, posting competitive times before an electrical problem dropped him down the order.

Mini will not be in a position to commit to a full programme next year and is unlikely to start its campaign until April or May at the earliest. This could appeal to Gronholm, who has previously said that he misses the driving in the World Rally Championship but not the hectic schedule of a full calendar.

The aim of the Portugal test next week is simply to put more kilometres on the car and assess basic durability, rather than looking at any specific set-up work.
