2008 repeat in store?

Rain is expected to reach the Wallonia region of Belgium on Thursday evening. Half-measures are not expected and the rain will be particularly heavy at times. Conversely there may just be drizzle at other times as the rain continues to work its way slowly east by Friday afternoon, but certainly a very wet first day of action is currently forecast with little chance for dry running. Temperatures will be cool with a maximum of 18 degrees.

This, of course, throws the weekend into immediate chaos for the teams, although, as usual they will do their best to adapt, with just one hour on Saturday morning left to use for tyre evaluation, high and low level fuel running and general set-up work.

The rain will continue on Friday evening and overnight into Saturday. Latest mathematical models published this morning predict that the rain could continue until just after dawn on Saturday morning - and with a low overnight temperature of just nine degrees Celsius, it could take several hours before the track surface is completely dry.

Showers and light sprinkles of rain are likely to follow on behind the main band of rain during the late stages of Saturday morning and throughout the afternoon. Even if the showers hold off, qualifying promises to be enthralling given the disrupted practice forecast. Temperatures will be even cooler than on Friday at just 16 Celsius.

Sunday will provide the best of the weekend's weather, but given the amount of rain expected on Friday and into Saturday, that should not be too difficult. The support races will take place in dry conditions and we may even see some sunny spells for a time. But as we move through past midday towards the race start, clouds will slowly arrive from the north west and showers are possible before the end of the race - a very similar forecast to the 2008 race at this circuit. Temperatures will recover slight but 17 degrees Celsius is some way short of feeling comfortable.

It will rain every day but Sunday ! The race will be weird: no rain, no Raikkonen ( and Fisico by the way ),no Badoer... It will be fantastic to see the Mercedes very competitive here and Schumacher repeat his fabulous performance of 1995 ( as he got a 10 place penalty )!

I wish Spa was in its pre-2002 condition, with Eau Rouge being the best corner in F1, the Bus Stop being better and more challenging and there being gravel and grass rather than tarmac as run off areas.
