Sources on the internet say it's Giorgio Bartocci, it is a recent accident. It's from the FIA GT Weekend in Brno.

EDIT : Found a website with some pictures : Warning ! Violent images

http://www.foltyn.cz/car/lambo.htm

You can see him hanging out of the car, pictures show how hard it really was.

Oh dear... I hope he's doing ok. I don't think I've ever seen a Lambo that comprehensively destroyed; that was a massive hit.

Shocking incident!

I thought these times were over with todays safety standards. He nearly got thrown out of the car, which shouldn´t ever ever ever ever happen in 2010. It´s not the 70s for god´s sake.

Plus don´t they use safety fuel cells? I mean the fuel cell stood strong even in the Kubica and Glock incidents, which were horrible hits at way over 200 km/h.
In indycar the fuel cells do their job, I think even in Nascar.
Why not in this car?
Maybe no FIA homologation - and using the standard Lambo fuel cell, not a safety cell?

I don't think they use safety fuel cells. Otherwise (as you said) the car wouldn't be burning that hard. Safety in this crash was a pure shame. He nearly got thrown out of his car. So probably something with his seatbelts failed as well.

The driver is reportedly awake and off a respirator with broken ribs, a broken leg and second-degree burns over 40% of his body.

well that´s good news.
I guess he can consider himself lucky, not to lose an arm or suffer serious internal injuries, like liver and kidney damage.
The way he hung outof the car was a nightmare.

Thanks for the info, Tom!

That's good news if he seems to be doing better.

I must agree that it seems like the safety standards failed. The FIA should seriously look at what happened. The car just seemed to disintegrate then go up in flames.

Here's an interview titled : "Babini, the hero who saved Bartocci." http://www.omnicorse.it/magazine/1508/b ... o-bartocci
And here is the translated version. It's about one of the guys that took Bartocci out of the car.

btw. it's funny to see that on much websites that I visit searching for information about the driver they linked my video of the incident on youtube. :p

This race will be broadcasted on TV this weekend. Don't know which channel though. Probably MotorsTV. Will keep checking the TV guide out. They might show a better angle of the accident.
