Block expects tough time in Portugal

American star Ken Block says that Portugal is set to be one of his toughest rallies yet after completing the recce for the event, which starts tomorrow.

“It’s real tough,” said the Monster World Rally Team driver. “To be completely honest, it’s not my favourite type of route as I tend to prefer the really fast stuff. But it’s a question of getting used to everything, and it was very useful to test before the event.”

Former Ford factory driver Markko Martin sat in with Block during the test on Monday, and Block also rode alongside Ford team leader Mikko Hirvonen.

“It was really useful to compare our driving styles,” said the ‘gymkhana’ star. “They are not night and day different but I learned a lot from my experiences with Markko and Mikko. I’m basically too aggressive in some places but not aggressive enough in others, so we need to find the right balance.”

Monster World Rally Team manager Derek Dauncey said: “It was the first time that Ken has actually been able to give input during a test on suspension changes and mapping options. The result is a car more fine-tuned for Ken’s driving style, so we’re looking forward to seeing that pay off this weekend.”

More to the recce than a drive on the country

There was already action on Alentejo and Algarve roads with the first recce
While most people realise that the pre-event recce is essential for the competing crews to make and refine their pace notes, few understand the effort that goes into ensuring the highest levels of safety and fair play are observed.

The regulations allow competing crews two passes over every stage. But for an event such as the Vodafone Rally de Portugal which uses one loop of stages run twice, once on the morning and once on the afternoon, this doesn’t mean they get four passes over each piece of road. The regulations treat a double-run stage as a single test when it comes to the recce.

The prospect of 75 cars all trying to recce the same stage at the same time is clearly impossible, so the organisers produce a strict timetable outlining who is permitted to drive over each stage and when. The field is split into two groups, Red (comprising P1, P2 and S-WRC drivers) and Green (P3 and others) and each is permitted a two-hour window to cover a particular stage. The green group follows the red group so that both groups aren’t on the same stage at the same time.

Teams of marshals are present at every stage start and end and record on the crews’ passage cards each time they pass, ensuring each only enters each stage twice. The crews recce one stage and then, a bespoke set of directions leads them back to the start of the same stage to drive a second time, before moving on to the next stage.

Because the roads remain open to the general public during the recce, the maximum speed permitted by the crews is strictly limited and in Portugal, this is 90kmh. This is monitored by on-board telemetry for the P1, P2 and P3 crews and other crews selected by the organisers, as well as familiar roadside speed-measuring devices, as deemed appropriate by the organisers and the local authorities.

Because of the open roads, the local Police assist in areas where heavy traffic is expected, to help maintain the flow of traffic and ensure the safety of both the general public and the competing crews.

While you might think that the local population would dread the recce, the opposite is true in Portugal. As a nation, the Portuguese are perhaps the most passionate rally fans and the prospect of the recce as well as the rally itself passing nearby is enough to bring fans out in droves, all vying for a glimpse of their heroes as they prepare for the weekend’s action.

Full entertainment at Estádio Algarve

There will be far more than just the opening stage of this year’s Vodafone Rally de Portugal taking place in the Algarve Stadium on Thursday 27 May. The organisers have prepared a full program of entertainment, culminating with the best rally drivers in the world getting the competition for the weekend underway.

Firstly, all the main drivers will be taking part in an autograph signing session from 14.00 – 15.00 in the Rally Village, located in the centre of the Algarve Stadium service park. This will be a chance for rally fans to get up close and personal with the stars, just hours ahead of the start of the rally.

Doors to the stadium open at 17.00hrs for fans and the action begins shortly afterwards.

The first stage of the Rallye de Portugal Revival, featuring a host of classic rally cars, such as Ford Escorts and Lancia Stratos will take place at 17.40 and last for approximately one hour.

Following the end of the Revival stage there will be a demonstration of freestyle motorcycle riding by the Portuguese national champions, Humberto Ribeiro and Ricardo Domingos, better known as ‘Arrepiado’.

Once the noise of the motorcycles has died down, at 19.00, the WRC drivers will take to the stage but for their parade, as they are driven round in a selection of classic convertibles – probably the slowest they will ever have covered a special stage in Portugal.

After the Portuguese National anthem has been played by a local orchestra at 19.23, it will be time for the start of this year’s Vodafone Rally de Portugal, with the first pair of drivers lining up on the start line at 19.25.

The field will run in reverse order, so that the final pairing, Sebastien Loeb Vs Mikko Hirvonen will start at 21.53 and round-out the live television coverage of the opening stage, which runs from 21.00 to 22.00 and will be shown on Channel 2.

As the noise dies down and the rally cars are put in parc ferme for the night, all thoughts will turn to the first full day of action, as the first crew leaves the Algarve Stadium at 08.25 on Friday, ready for six stages and 128Km of action on stages to the north-west of Faro.

Hey, it's not a mullet look! No way LOL Mullet haircut is - as Wiki says - short at the front and at the sides and long in the back. Kimi's hair is long at the front, long at the sides and long in the back.

Well....I got the impression, that it's a mullet, cuz of the fact, that he is always wearing a goofy cap, which hide the other parts of the head....
