Red Bull Rally de Portugal preview
There were originally seven wonders of the ancient world: the Colossus of Rhodes (a big statue), the Pyramids at Giza (the only ancient wonder that still exists), the hanging gardens of Babylon (a cheat, as they didn't actually hang), the mausoleum at Halicarnassus (so that Greek leaders could enjoy being dead), the statue of Zeus at Olympia (apparently even bigger than the Colossus) and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (again, think super-size).
The final wonder was the lighthouse at Alexandria. When it was built, in around 280BC, it was around 135 metres high: making it the tallest structure in the world for several centuries. These days, it would probably be classified as a low-rise building in downtown Manhattan.
The island that the lighthouse was built on was called Pharos, which eventually became the Latin word for 'lighthouse' as well. Faro in Portugal, the coastal venue for round six of the World Rally Championship, also sports a number of elaborate lighthouses: no doubt inspired by the wonder of Alexandria.
It will be an eighth wonder if Red Bull driver Kimi Raikkonen gets near the podium on what will only be his sixth World Rally Championship event of any description and just his fifth event at the wheel of the Citroen Junior Team C4 WRC.
But that is the objective that the former Grand Prix champion is steadily working towards and with every rally he is showing a distinct improvement. On his last rally, in Turkey, the Finn finished an excellent fifth overall - boosting his confidence for the future.
Portugal is a somewhat different proposition. It's one of the classics on the World Rally Championship calendar and consequently all the top drivers know it well. The last Portuguese Grand Prix was held at Estoril in 1996 - five years before Kimi started driving in Formula One - so he has never even competed in Portugal at the top level. In fact, he has never even been to Portugal before.
"It's fair to say that everything is completely new to me," said Kimi. "I've been testing in France, but it's not the same as being in competition. The other drivers have been to New Zealand - which wasn't on my programme - and they also know the Rally of Portugal well, so it's not going to be easy for us. That doesn't really bother me though, as I am here to learn more than anything else. The final result at the end of the rally doesn't matter to me really: it's all about how much information I can take away for the future. We're just continuing our improvement step by step."
Co-driver Kaj Lindstrom has considerably more experience of Portugal, having competed in 1999 and 2001. On those occasions though the rally was held in the north of the country around Porto: where a pre-rally roadshow took place on the Sunday before the start. Sharing a car with Citroen's factory drivers Sebastien Loeb and Dani Sordo, who are also backed by Red Bull, Kimi thrilled a huge crowd while Kaj looked on.
"When it comes to the actual rally It's going to be a tricky event, but I'm seeing Kimi grow in confidence all the time," said Kaj. "Since we started competing together, my role has actually changed. Kimi is getting to know the car more and more, so rather than guiding him I am now just giving him the information he needs to make his own decisions. That's just one example of how Kimi is really growing into his role as a rally driver, so we're both really looking forward to the weekend."

Next week we head out to Portugal and the 6th event of the 2010 Championship. 18 gravel stages are waiting to be contested in the Algarve region, and service park is based just outside the Algarve Stadium. Petter Solberg World Rally Team will be in Faro from tomorrow, Saturday, and starts the preparations with a small test on Sunday.
- Our car is rebuilt from New Zealand and we are now ready to start in Portugal, says Petter Solberg. – Being 5th on the road from the start, gives us a good starting position and we plan to make the most of it. We didn’t finish in New Zealand the way we wanted, but during the rally we definitely showed that we are able to fight with the big teams.
Petter Solbergs Citroën C4 were air freighted back from New Zealand and arrived in France a week ago. The guys at our workshop have worked hard to rebuild the car for Portugal, and yesterday it was loaded onto our trailer bound for Portugal.
A total of 75 crews from 33 nations are on the entry list for Rally de Portugal. The rally gets underway with a super special on the Algarve Stadium on Thursday evening and also ends with the same super special on Sunday. Petter and Phil has some good results from Portugal, they ended 4th in 2009 and 2nd in 2007. Sebastien Loeb won in Portugal both in 2009 and 2007.
Rally de Portugal starts with a super special Thursday 27 of May in the evening.

Hirvonen calles for changes to testing rules
Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen has called on the FIA to allow teams to test prior to a World Rally Championship event outside of Europe again.
Hirvonen emphasised that he is not advocating the kind of wholesale return to testing which once resulted in some teams spending three months preparing for the Safari Rally, but the Finn feels it would make sense to allow the teams to use their rally cars for a private shakedown on the Monday prior to longhaul rallies.
“A test would have helped in New Zealand, particularly because the shakedown was on asphalt,” said Hirvonen. “The first time we drove the rally car on the loose surface was when we got to the first stage. Okay, we don’t need a big test or anything like that, but it would have been good just to get in the car for some kilometres on Monday.”
A further source of frustration for Hirvonen is that private teams – including the Petter Solberg World Rally Team – are not bound by the regulations and do test on the Monday ahead of flyaway rallies.
“Petter tested in New Zealand and he tested in Mexico,” continued Hirvonen. “I think if some people are allowed to do it, we should all be allowed to do it. It’s not going to add a lot of money, the cars are here anyway and we’re not going to do a lot of testing when we have to compete in the car a couple of days later.”
Solberg denied his test offered any advantage, saying: “I don’t have any other options. If I had the chance I would rather test in Europe. It costs more to do the test, and to use the car you use for the rally is not a good idea. So, it’s rather like a shakedown of the car because it was brand-new rebuilt and just to check and recheck everything. But I am sure all the other teams have done a proper job before the rally, you know, testing on a similar type of roads in Europe.”

Red Bull World Rally Championship driver Kimi Raikkonen has admitted his result from this week's Rally of Portugal is not important to him, as he's more interested in getting to the end of the Faro-based event.
Raikkonen missed the last round of the championship in New Zealand, but will now contest every rally until the end of the season. The only rally where he has any previous experience is his home event, Rally Finland.
