It's great to have a scoring system that rewards the winner of the race, however this only works if several teams are competitive... if we have a season where one team seems to have a clear advantage then lower points between 1st and 2nd will allow for more excitement throughout the season rather than handing the championship over to the fastest car by the 10th race?

I think a few teams will be competitive enough. With KERS gone and less dramatic rule changes than in 2009, it seems unlikely that any of the big guns will botch their cars. I also expect last year's top teams to remain strong; that should leave us with Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren able to challenge for victories, especially considering their top-notch driver line-ups. And let's not forget how close together the field was last year, with even Force India and Toro Rosso managing several top-10 qualifying results.

There's a proposal to add extra points for pole position & for the fastest lap of the race.

Points system could face another overhaul
Another change to Formula One's point system could be announced ahead of the 2010 season.
Germany's Auto Motor und Sport and Finland's Turun Sanomat reported that, after the existing points system was amended in December, talks to implement yet another change are now taking place. The latest proposal would see 25 points for a win, 18 for second, 15 for third, with the rest of the positions down to tenth earning 12-10-8-6-4-2-1 respectively. This is compared to the 25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1 system, which was introduced by the F1 commission and ratified by the FIA just last month to prepare for expanded grid numbers next season.
Under the new proposal the winner will receive a larger reward, which is closer to the medals idea Bernie Ecclestone suggested for the 2009 season. He argued that having a championship decided by race victories would create more incentive for drivers to overtake at the front of the field, rather than settling for a good points haul in second or third place. Proportionately the system introduced in December does not award the winner any more over second place than the outgoing 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points attribution used since 2003.

Last month doubts were cast as to whether a change will happen at all, when it was revealed that the F1 commission discussed the topic for just two minutes during its meeting, with only US F1's Peter Windsor pushing for a change.

25-18-15-12-8-6-4-2-1 sounds better

but as they are talking of giving a point for pole and fastest lap, with 25 points for a win, it would be insignificant.

I don't think so, the race should always be where the points are decided. Qualifying souldn't have any bearing on races apart from deciding who starts where on the grid. Points for fastest lap will just lead to cars pitting on the 3rd last lap and putting on new tyres to attempt to get some extra points.

sounds ok, but i would never give a point for the pole, cuz if someone takes a big lead in championship.... and he is only missing 1 point to be champ, and i dont want that the championship gets decided in qualifaing.... so stupid, but i have naothing agains fastest lap - 1pt, as long as its in the race....

so if the drivers pit on the 3rd last lap and going for the fastest lap, its another competition and will surely be entertaining, a quali inside a race..

Teams agree to points system tweak
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81048 wrote:Formula 1 has edged closer to a further overhaul of its points structure for the 2010 season after teams approved a new system that will offer greater rewards for winning, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

Just more than one month after the old 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system was replaced with a MotoGP-type format (25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1), sources have revealed a meeting of F1 think tank the Sporting Working Group in London on Friday approved a further overhaul to reward more for race wins.

Rather than there being a five points different between first and second, teams agreed to expand that difference to seven points - with further tweaks to the points taking place lower down the order.

The new points structure approved by the SWG is: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1.

The matter still needs to be approved by next month's meeting of the Formula 1 Commission before the FIA World Motor Sport Council can put it into the 2010 regulations, but this is likely to be a formality with teams already having voted in favour of the changes.

Although yet another change to the regulations is not ideal for F1, especially after such fanfare in December at the first amendment, Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner is adamant that the sport should always be ready to put its hands up if it thinks things are wrong.

He also believed a greater points gap between first and second would provide greater motivation for drivers to fight harder for the win.

"I think you should never be afraid of change so long as it is a change for the better," he told AUTOSPORT ahead of the SWG meeting.

"And I think that what the points are trying to be designed to do are first of all - to generate a pecking order perhaps lower down in the top ten - so that with the points going down to 10th place there is reward for a top ten finish.

"But I think also one of the factors that Bernie is keen to look at is perhaps having a heavier weight between first, second and third, so there is more emphasis that rather than drivers cruising and collecting points, that they have to go for it.

"It is not because drivers don't want to take the risk, but if the points difference between a win and second is two points it is not the end of the world, whereas if it is a significant number then it adds motivation for the drivers to push each other very hard."

AUTOSPORT understands that the SWG also discussed the idea of awarding points for pole position or fastest lap, but neither of these concepts were agreed.

The SWG also talked at length about the possibility of introducing a rule that would force drivers to make two mandatory pit stops during a race, but this was not approved either. F1 drivers will therefore only need to make a single pit-stop in 2010 so as to ensure that they run on both types of tyres made available.
