Bridgestone to quit F1 after 2010 | Pirelli to take over

Post by cformula1 » 02 Nov 2009, 07:16

Bridgestone to quit F1 after 2010
Spoiler:
Bridgestone will withdraw from Formula 1 at the end of the 2010 season.

The Japanese tyre manufacturer announced its decision not to renew its F1 contract early on Monday morning.

Bridgestone Motorsport director Hiroshi Yasukawa said in a statement: "The decision made by the board of directors comes after considerable and lengthy evaluations and has been based on the company's need to redirect its resources towards further intensive development of innovative technologies."

Bridgestone had been a tyre supplier in Formula 1 since 1997 and had been the sole supplier since the beginning of the 2008 season, following Michelin's departure, winning 156 of the 223 grands prix it entered.

"Our sincere appreciation is extended to Bernie Ecclestone and Formula One Management, the Formula 1 teams with whom it has been an honour to work alongside and the many F1 fans who have followed our activities over the past 13 years," added Yasukawa.

Bridgestone will continue in its role as partner and tyre supplier to the GP2 Series and GP2 Asia Series, and will also continue as the sole supplier in MotoGP until at least 2011.

A bit of a surprise. Maybe Goodyear will return then. Michelin would be my favorite for certain reasons but I don't think they're interested in racing without competition.

And they have a bit of a history.......
Spoiler:
Indianapolis 2005
I would like to see Goodyear back, but I reckon that Dunlop or Pirelli would jump at the opportunity of having their tyres marketed as "The official tyre of Formula 1".

A few tyre manufacturers would be cool. I mean, I always liked the 'fight' between those companies
Off-Topic: show
Wouldn't this fit better in the 2010 Forum Section ?

Not really. It became a game of 'who has the best tyres' by the end.

After 2010, i.e this refers to 2011 so it would be out of place in the 2010 forum section

Oh .. I always liked that tbh. As long as we don't have an indy 05 replay i'm ok with several manufacturers.

oh if you see it that way. Someone create a 2011 forum then :lol:

*Shocked*

Michelin my favourite to return, but as Az already said, I don't think they're interested when there's no competition..

Past F1 tyre manufacturers include:

* Avon
* Continental
* Dunlop
* Englebert
* Firestone
* Goodyear
* Michelin
* Pirelli

So which one. Will be even more exciting to have more than one. Or rather teams to make their own tyre..

Indy 05 proved to me that tyre wars are detrimental to the sport.

I reckon that 2-3 manufacturers would work under controlled circumstances.

That´s a big negative surprise. I think they did a great job and the logo is also cool :)

I hope for another single supplier. A tire war influences F1 too much imo, the best examples are 2004 - Ferrari 15 wins out of 18 races, 2005 - 0 (1) wins out of 19 races. 95% of that was because of the tyres, in both years. So it can make good things too good and decent things look c**p.

A single supplier is the way to go in F1, als in economic terms.

I would like to see a Goodyear comeback. Never liked Michelin, especially for Indy 2005 - It killed F1 in the USA.

With 13 teams we really needed a tyre war, hopefully we'll get Michelin and Goodyear Flag:##
