The wheel should not have come off the other car, wheel tethers are supposed to prevent that. Appalling incident, RIP and condolences to his friends and family.

This is terrible, and horribly tragic..

Was watching it this afternoon, when there was a commercial break with the MotoGP, haven;t seen it live, but this is really.. No words for it..

After the deaths of Senna and Ratzenberger 15 years ago, major safety changes were made, but surely nothing really can be done to stop this happening again. It was a 1 in a trillion chance, and no matter what they make the tethers from they'll never withstand the forces of crashing at full speed. RIP. :(

Rest in peace surtees.

The worst is that he is in any case responsible of his crash.

Oh that's bad. That's nasty, no :( I've just read it now, god. Just 18.

I hope he'll rest in peace.

Poor guy. The wheel landed on his head from above, so I don't think he stood much chance.

RIP Henry.
No, I'm not calmer. Just more jaded.

Wow. Even with all the safety precautions, it is still inevitable that something will happen. Motorsport will never be made completely safe, but if I had to get into a car accident, I would certainly choose to do it in a racing car. A salute to Henry Surtees, you will not be forgotten.

very very sad news, but why arent the wheels like in f1 so they cant go off sometimes, very bad news, i think in the future all open wheel race cars will have a roof, i mean it will look like a airplane roof, like a f16 fighter has or other planes, u will see safety must improve that such thing not happen, u saw in melbourne that kubica s wheel hit him, but nothing happened, and here where the speed is very low not like f1 car, and still someone dies, all our toughts are with Surtees and his family, RIP

Whats worse is that John lived through the whole 50s and 60s - the dangerous era and now this happens :(

I said at the start of this year we'd be lucky not to have a major fatality in motor sport as we're not improving tracks (no offence to Brands, it was a fluke) and making cars more smaller - this is going to happen in F1 unless they protect the driver more - we're at another stage like in 1994. I can only remember this fatalities in European single seater racing

1995: F3000, Marco Campos

This is definitely the worst since poor Marco's horrible accident

Reaction

Rubens Barrichello: "I am so sad with the news from Brands Hatch... time to go to bed...all my feelings to the Surtees family... even if you don't know the driver for us drivers it seems that something tragic happened to a friend of ours...I am so sad"

Nelson Piquet: "Really, really sad news about Henry Surtees. I am thinking of his family. Such a sad day"

RIP Henry Surtees

As I wasn't around to see racing in the 60's/70's, sometimes it can be difficult to realise how dangerous racing is, with all of the safety precautions that are taken to try and stop something like this happening, and this just shows that it can still happen.
