Swine Flu

Post by Fergie1 » 26 Apr 2009, 15:45

Sounds like this nasty s*** is spreading quickly. If you don't know, a new deadly flu has come from nowhere in the past week or so.

Do you think it will turn into a global pandemic?

Basically, wash your hands, carry sanitizer and all the usual things. If it is as it was about SARS, then just take the precautions and you should be ok. We had a SARS crisis in Toronto back in 2003 so I'm hoping that we're prepared this time...

Phil if this flu is spread to us by Tuesday the last thing you'll think about is exams. In Britiain it looks like we're OK, but its terrifying nonetheless.

Student populations always spread things so quickly. Currently Sheffield Uni has Mumps going around, which my friend got from his gf up there, and there's glandular fever everywhere, with a few cases of meningitis here and there at Reading.

On the subject of global pandemics, its always less bad than people expect. People look at past pandemics, like Spanish flu (which killed more people than WW1 did) and fear the worst, forgetting our standards of cleanliness have improved so much. Bird flu and SARS were massively overhyped. People worried about Ebola for ages too.
No, I'm not calmer. Just more jaded.

it can be anywhere, as it is very easy for people to travel at any part of the world nowadays - and very easy to carry and spread the virus.

the thing that is spreding it so quickly is the people who were in Mexico on 'vacation' are rushing home thinking that they won't get it if they go home, but don't realise that they might have it.

My two cents.
I'm not scared of Swine Flu, i believe that if i get bitten by a pig, it gives me special powers. :p

I've just heard from the radio that the flu has spread into Spain and Britain. "WHO (World Health Organization) raised the level of influenza pandemic alert from the current phase 3 to phase 4, which is based on epidemiological data demonstrating human-to-human transmission and the ability of the virus to cause community-level outbreaks." Our government has launhed on-airport health examinations from now on. It gets serious.
