Need help start karting.
Need help start karting.
I have been thinking about this problem for a few months now, but still cant figure out a way. So i thought I'd post it on F1-Zone. Which have great motorsport fans.
I have always been into cars at a very young age. When i was about 6 years old, I could recognize the car models by just looking at some part of the car. When i was 14 I learned to drive a manual gear box car. So much for car experience. I am 17 now.
I later got into motorsports (especially F1), and knew what I wanted to do. I knew my dream. To be competing at higher levels of motor racing. As we all know go-karting is the first step of racing. Kids can start go-karting as young as 8. But we all know there are some such as Pedro De la Rosa, Takuma Sato etc.. who started late. I may not be able to get to F1 but I wanna go as high as possible.
But the country that I live in didn't have a kart circuit. So I had no choice but to wait. Until the end of 2006. The first international standard kart circuit was build. I was very excited to hear about this. I tried rental karting a few times and i loved it. But there is another problem. Money. Since this is the only kart circuit in my country, everything is more expensive compared to countries with many kart circuits. And I need to start karting as soon as possible as my youth is flying away lol, and i have a lot to catch up comparing to the rich kids who had everything they wanted. And were able to start karting at a very young age.
After talking with the teams and circuit, I realised that I would have to raise about $50,000 (€4560) to start which includes 2nd hand kart, suit, shoes, gloves, helmet, track memberships, team memberships etc... Starting from the second month onwards i would have to raise about $8000 (€730) every month which includes tires, fuels, memberships etc..
Now of course this is not something I can afford. Over the past few months of thinking, I have made the following conclusions.
Sponsor:
Nobody will sponsor until I start winning many races.
I had another Idea about sponsorship. It was something like honda, i will ask many people to donate and have their names on the kart. But dont think its gonna work.
Parents:
I don't want to ask that much money from my parents.
Job:
My school is very far from my house, about 1 and a half hour traveling time. And my school starts at 8 am and ends at 3:30 pm. So I cant have a full time job. Even if i get a part time job for weekends, it would still not be enough to cover the costs.
Unless over many years time. But I am starting late already, by now i should have been competing in formula BMW, Renault.
Anyone who comes up with a way that works and if I am able to start go-karting. I would be more then happy to put the sticker of F1-Zone and the persons name on my kart lol.
I know its going to be hard but I want to do this.
Thanks for reading this.
Any ideas?

Re: Need help start karting.
Interesting! .. i'll dare to say something
Basically charity begins at home.Example Narain karthikeyan's father sold his house for his karting school fees.
So i think the only way i can figure is initial investment from your parents. But still its always difficult ..their is too much competition and finally it all depends on your dedication and skills.
Race/practice hard and study hard ..so their will be always backup plan for your future :T:@

Thats exactly what I think, word to word. Thats why I am still studying hard.zack wrote: Race/practice hard and study hard ..so their will be always backup plan for your future :T:@
Yes I am very determined in what I do. I just need one opportunity, I will push very hard on both studies and racing. Since other drivers can do it , there is no reason why i cant. Not a single reason.
Thanks for the reply mate. By the way are you Indian?
Waiting for more replies.

I see. And yea as a fellow Indian Narain's story have always inspired me. Though I don't live in India.
And as the funding from family, my family dosent really like motorsport. And we are not rich. I think it will be very hard to get funding from there. If i were to ask that much money, theyll think im nuts. lol
What else can I do?

Re: Need help start karting.
Call me a cynic (I prefer "Realist" though ), but just about everyone in karting leagues wants to rise up to F1. Had I been in Canada (I was on vacation in Europe at the time) when the Grand Prix was here, I would have been going to Montreal to meet Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld because my friend's boyfriend (We're buddies) works for Intel. Also at that meeting were drivers in Formula BMW. Apparently, my friend's boyfriend asked Robert about their chances of getting into F1 and Robert said that of the five or six drivers that were present, they would be lucky if only one of them made it into F1.
I'm not trying to turn you away from Karting and following your dream, but I think that if you don't have the money, and your family won't let you try it out, you might as well shoot for something else within motorsport. Seeing from how you LOVE cars, why not be a designer or engineer (I sounded very Indian there, right !grin! )?. You would fulfill your dream of being in the motorsport field, and you might be amazing at designing cars!
Just to add a footnote, when I was young (Around 3 or 4), I was massively into cars. My first word was "car"! However, after a lot of begging, demanding, and crying, my parents just wouldn't put me in a karting league because they didn't have the money. My father was finishing his PhD and my mom was still a student. I vowed to join the motorsport scene in some good ranking capacity when I grew up. Only a few years ago, I renewed that vow and I will be trying my hardest to join the ranks of Formula 1 (Preferably) or GP2 or other racing leagues in a medical capacity, and build my leadership from there.
Shoot for the moon, unknown, but just know that if you can't, or don't hit the moon, you'll be among the stars. Best of luck

Thanks for the comments mate.
But as I said before i aint giving up on my dream, i m a very determined to be one of those five or six people that Robert mentioned. And its not that my family wont let me try it out, its just that we dont have that much money.
I am not gonna let money stand in my way of achieving my dream. It may take years before i start in any level but I will do it. I will raise that money in time. I will try everything i can to shoot the moon, until its impossible.
Of course i have to be realistic here, as i mentioned before if i don make it to F1 i will happy enough to be competing in other levels. But i want to be racing. I was never good at drawing or designing , i always hated it. For engineering, i m just not a science guy, never liked it.
Thanks again for the comments mate.

Re: Need help start karting.
No worries unknown. I do hope you achieve your dream.
Just to clarify my comment, Robert said that of the 5 or 6 F-BMW drivers that were present, it would be lucky if only 1 of them made it into F1. Also, if you join a team, you don't necessarily have to be an engineer or designer, there are thousands of jobs within an F1 team that pay very well. I'm hoping to become a medical or ergonomics specialist within an F1 team (Stuff you just don't hear about, but nonetheless pay well). Anyhow, keep karting, and do what you love! Who knows, we might be working together one day!

Re: Need help start karting.
Even if only 1 one of the 5 -6 have a chance, I will try to create the best circumstances to be that one who might be luck. Even if there is 0.1% chance of that one guy, then I want to be that guy.
And its not because of money or the glamorous i want to be racing. Even if F1 drivers didnt get paid and f1 was just a expensive hobby of a couple of guys, then i would find and work very hard to find my self a good paying job so that i could afford that hobby. But fortunately it isn't .
But of course when its impossible, ill be happy enough to settle in other careers in motorsports.
Thanks for the reply, mate. Hopefully we'll see each other some time in the future.

Re: Need help start karting.
Hey unknown, I don't want you to go away so soon, but how's the karting thing working out for you? Also, you mentioned that you weren't good in the maths or sciences, but I'm wondering, what are you good at, academically speaking?
I'm not trying to insult you or anything. Just curious.
