To me this just shows how poorly operated F1 really is. There should be another 4 seats available for those 9 or 10 names (using the logic of having 13 teams in the sport). But instead there are 11 teams, with most teams struggling financially and in excess of $500m leaving the sport and being banked by CVC.

Do you mean 2014 will be his last season? Yes might be. He's probably not going to be in a position to win the title again unless McLaren have a stellar performance jump. However, he did well for Honda and with them coming back in 2015 it might be good PR for them to have him in the car for at least their first season.

Yes, it would make sense for him to stay until 2015 for the Honda engines. It would be mutually beneficial for driver and engine supplier.

Survival of the team is the priority. Then again, I think Lotus will suck next year so he may have made a bad move anyway.

The overriding question is: what the f*** has Lotus's sponsorship department been doing for two years?

What makes you think so?
A craven can be as brave as any man, when there is nothing to fear. And we all do our duty, when there is no cost to it. How easy it seems then, to walk the path of honor.

On the race side, even with two fast and very good drivers they were only P4 in the championship. In terms of race strategy, they are not the best. Effectively, they're replacing Kimi with Pastor - there is no way they'll be higher than P4 in the championship, unless Romain is amazing. The Williams of 2012 was a very, very good car, but Maldonado did not utilise it properly. Can you see Maldonado scoring more than 100 points next year?

They do not have the biggest team and they have lost a lot of staff over the past year. They focused heavily on 2013 while other teams, such as Force India and Williams, practically abandoned their 2013 car after April/May time.

If it's an engine formula, then it is expected that it'll be Mercedes > Renault > Ferrari. Red Bull will be the fastest Renault team.

I don't think Lotus will be struggling to score points, but I see them as the one team who could slip back next year (maybe 2011 level) and I know it's not just me who thinks this.

Brazilian media says Nasr is close to a Sauber seat.

Interesting analysis. Well, I'm not defending Maldonado or anything but I think he is a good driver, I would have been happier if Hulkenberg was in Lotus, but if Lotus can provide him with a car as good as E21 then I think he may score some very good points, but I think what you say about them slipping back makes sense, loss of James Allison may be costly for them next year.
