The 2013 Rookie Thread

Post by sejtur » 21 Mar 2013, 18:58

Hi guys, welcome to the 2013 Rookie Thread. In this topic you can discuss and compare the rookies that partake in F1 this year.

I also thought it would be nice to do a poll on this and see what everyone thinks of who has the most chances of being succesful this year. To me, this year the rookies are much more interesting than before because there are 3 guys that I have seen in other racing classes (Chilton, Gutierrez and Bianchi) and thought they were good. And there is a Dutch guy in F1 again, Giedo.

I limited the poll to 30 days so that at the end of the year we can compare the results what we thought now.

I think out of the back three, Bianchi. Chilton and Van der Garde have talent but that is usurped by finance.

I also think Bottas will get more credit but unless Williams improve then Gutierrez will score more points.

I found Bianchi super impressive in Melbourne. He would probably have scored some points in a midfield car.

Chilton on the other hand was utterly anonymous, one second slower than his teammate even though he's had the lion's share of winter testing. You can't help feeling that his F1 opportunity wasn't hard-earned by showing outstanding talent in the feeder series, but bought by daddy's money. Will need to pull quite some moves to get rid of his "pay driver" label.

VDG: on the paper the guy should've won GP2 and graduated to F1 eons ago. The thing is, he didn't and he's not getting any younger. How this opportunity was earned I cannot say for sure, but it may well have come too late. With the Caterham being such a terrible package at the moment, I expect very little out of him. Even though his teammate has been in F1 longer than him, he's pretty much a junior driver compared to Giedo, so he won't get much credit for beating him if he does.

Gutierrez & Bottas: both calm and collected on their debut... and slow. Sauber and Williams should be in the running for points in a normal race, but they never were. While Hülkenberg's seniority over Gutierrez is a given, Maldonado is under pressure after his numerous mistakes last year so there could be room for Bottas to shine. At any rate, I expect them to be solid but not necessarily to "impress".

Absolutely no french bias towards Bianchi. :p

The rankings of the rookies, in terms of creating positive impression in the F1 paddock (and on track obviously) will be:

1) Bianchi
2) Gutierrez
3) Bottas
4) Chilton
5) Van De Garde

The top two are great talents and have consistently shown that in their junior careers. Bottas needs time but will be good. Chilton is ok, but nothing more. Van De Garde should be higher, but he's about 3-4 years late for getting in to F1.

Bottas needs to come out of his shell a bit more, or else he and Di Resta will make Team Invisible.

I reckon Bianchi will destroy the lot this season, and probably replace Di Resta next season.

Bottas is not in thesame team as Di Resta, tderias. You must mean Maldonado.

Bianchi also had a nice race in Malaysia! I found some videos of Chilton and Bianchi so we can compare them a bit.

I believe Guiterrez will be the most successful in terms of scoring points, but I believe Bianchi will be most successful in gaining interest. Going in impressing and standing out, id go for this;

Bianchi
Guiterrez
Van der Garde
Bottas
Chilton

Bottas is already far more impressive than Gutierrez and Van der Garde. He's been going under the radar but he's been better than Maldonado.

I don't rate Bottas that much right now, initial Impressions are that order for me, but in frank honesty its two races in. I'll probably change it come mid season but Initially Bottas didn't do much for me. Infact Guiterrez/Bottas/Van der garde to me are all pretty similar. Bianchi is clear top, Chilton clear bottom. Middle 3 can change every race I think.

I agree. For me right now it's Bianchi, Bottas, VDG, Gutierrez and Chilton. Right now I'm really excited for what Bianchi is going to bring to F1. There's an article on Autosport about him:

Bianchi: Formula 1's newest star

Questions have been raised in the past over his ability to cope with pressure, but Jules Bianchi seems to be well suited to life at Marussia, as Edd Straw explains

Jules Bianchi's prodigious pace for Marussia in the opening two races of this season seems to have taken the Formula 1 paddock by surprise. It shouldn't. While the Frenchman is perceived as an underachiever after failing to win the GP2 or Formula Renault 3.5 titles during his campaigns of the previous three seasons, his out-and-out speed has never been in doubt.

After all, this is a driver who was described by his ART Formula 3 race engineer, Theophile Gouzin, as "even quicker" than Sebastian Vettel in an interview with AUTOSPORT four years ago.

Jules is excelling as he has been under the wings of Ferrari. Even a few Test for Ferrari can bring out major improvements in a driver so probably that ethic is helping him out. No doubt Jules got Raw Talent that he is driving the wheels of the Marussia.

Impressed by Chilton in bahrain. Was quite close to bianchi. Could get interesting.

Pic did well finishing ahead of Esteban.
