Alonso made it clear to Ferrari that he wants Massa to stay.

So they decided to wait till Japan, if he keeps his form, all agreed on a new contract for 1 year.

I would kick him for good, Alonso fight for victory at every track, while Massa fights for P10....
So how do you wanna win the constructors with that..

@andrewbensonf1: Incidentally, new info casts more doubt on @Felipe1Massa staying at Ferrari - good source says @NicoHulkenberg deal already done.

Then his next tweet says, 'Problem is, an equally good - if not probably better - source says @Felipe1Massa is still most likely to stay but @NicoHulkenberg key option.' :p

Now that Perez is at Mclaren I would be pretty happy with Hulkenberg at Ferrari. I would prefer someone more surprising and with a higher profile like Heikki or Kobayashi but I'm happy with a change either way.

This would also pave the way for a Schumi Massa pairing at Sauber XD

Amazing. 7 seasons of speculation and he's still there.

In all honesty, he's had the pace since Monaco. It's just been a case of stringing a weekend together. His upturn in form could help Ferrari to 2nd in the WCC.

In fact, Massa has outscored Alonso over the last 5 races (Hungary > Japan)

There's a stand-out top three (maybe four) IMO but after that it's tough to say...

If Massa could perform as he has the last 5 races (with improved qualifying) over a whole season that'd be fine.

I've always had the hope that Ferrari has been quietly contacting Kimi. Or that Kubica could magically recover.... but as it goes...

Other than Kimi, I guess everyone else is too much of a gamble for Ferrari.
Unfortunately, Massa has been terrible; its been a weird surprise, but i dont think anyone expected such a struggle.

That great race in Japan made a very good statement towards Massa's case though. So if he is able to continue in this direction they might keep him. But if the struggle and inconsistency continues, might as well go for the gamble.

Hulkenberg is the best candidate imo.

Sutil could be a good option too, he's shown very good performances; but the yr away, and considering how crucial the new tires are... I doubt he'll get the Ferrari seat. Alguersuari at least has experience with the tires, but i think Sutil had better performances to argue in his favour. Plus Ferrari owe him for that Kimi shunt in monaco.

So i would say, if Ferrari are willing to gamble... Hulkenberg or Sutil are good options.

So Massa confirmed for 2013 and Vettel set for 2014.

That is great news. Vettel is an outstanding driver no doubt. And Massa has improved as well so it shouldn't be a bad year for Ferrari in 2013
