2012 Formula One Discussion

Post by f1freak » 01 Sep 2011, 05:27

The Turkish Grand Prix has been officially dropped from next year's Formula 1 calendar, after the FIA announced the definitive 20-race schedule on Wednesday.

As AUTOSPORT revealed last month, the Turkish event was taken off the provisional calendar issued by the FIA earlier this year as part of a revised version submitted by Bernie Ecclestone.

Despite discussions between Turkish organisers and Ecclestone no deal could be reached, which means the event will now not be part of the schedule for the first time since 2005.

Do you guys think that more efforts should have been made to save this GP as it was one of the highlights of the season & its been only 6 years since F1 has been there ?

I guess that's one less Red Bull freebie for next year. :p

In all seriousness, it's unfortunate to lose such a great track and I'm sure that, on sporting grounds, we'd all rather have sacrified one (or both) of the spanish races and both of the Middle East borefests. Perhaps unfortunately, though, other things have to be considered: Turkey isn't a particularly wealthy country, it has little to no motorsport tradition (that I know of), there's no turkish F1 driver or team, nor (to my knowledge) any young turkish driver making an impression in the feeder series, nor any huge turkish companies involved in motorsport. Also, several team bosses, echoed by FIA president Jean Todt, have stressed that having 20 races is going to be a logistical nightmare, and that more than 20 was absolutely out of question. With USA and India, two very promising markets for the future of F1, making it on the calendar, somebody had to give.

I understand that Toro Rosso has been sold to IPIC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internatio ... nt_Company) who are keen to re-sign both Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari.

Seriously? Does that mean the team will be rebranded next season? No more ties with RB from next season on? What about the drivers, are they still part of RB's young drivers programme or will they be officially forsaken, perhaps at the benefit of the new generation (Ricciardo, JEV)? Will be waiting anxiously on further updates.

There have been suggestions that the Faenza-based team will become known as Team UAE.

We have heard suggestions that a new team factory is already under construction in the Middle East. Logically, if this is happening it will be at the Yas Island circuit and will have direct access to the facility. This would make sense as the team’s current facilities are split between the old factory in Faenza and a windtunnel department in Bicester, England.
Interesting :zz:

Interesting news. Surprised that both Buemi and Alguersuari would be retained. I can see the Red Bull driver development program linking with another team (HRT?- feasible, given that Ricciardo drives for them), with the better of the two (Ricciardo and Vergne) getting the 2013 Red Bull role (replacing Webber, who I expect to move on/retire).

Turkey this year had the most amount of overtakes in a race and is rewarded with losing the Grand Prix.

Yeah, but the race was pretty standard, it was a joke the amount of passing.

Turkey's problem is that they have an awesome circuit that is aesthetically awful and generates little public interest. Such a white elephant.

It's not over yet for Turkey according to Blick newspaper, Turkey could join the calendar again if the situation in Bahrain still bad.

Istanbul Park is better than Bahrain but neither are spectacular.
