Defining races in a driver's career

Post by phil1993 » 12 May 2010, 16:47

This could be races that made them or broke them. I'll start off with some of the grid at the moment:

J. Button - Probably Hockenheim 2004. It showed him to be able to negotiate a problem brilliantly and fight back from way down on thr grid
L. Hamilton - I'd say Fuji 2007 - Stunning drive under pressure
M. Schumacher - Qualifying @ Spa 1991 - Elevated into stardom
S. Vettel - Monza 2008 - Everyone thought he would fall back from pole but he didn't
M Webber - Australia 2002 - 5th place on his debut in a Minardi
F Massa - Europe 2006 - First race with Rob Smedley as his race engineer
F Alonso - Malaysia 2003 - Pole + 3rd despite illness and inferior car

A Senna, Monaco 1984, brilliant drive in the Toleman in the wet, would've won had the race not been stopped
J Villeneuve, Australia 1996, almost won were it not for car issues (caused by a rookie error)
D Hill, Spain 1994, emotional victory under extreme pressure in the weeks following the tragic death of Senna and Ratzenberger

T Sato - Indianapolis 2004 - First and only podium
R Barrichello - Hockenheim 2000 - First victory
A Sutil - Monaco 2008 - Almost took his first couple of points, but we all know what happened ...
K Kobayashi - Abu Dhabi 2009 - First points, lots of media attention suddenly..
R Kubica - Montreal 2008 - First victory + lead in championship
H Kovalainen - Fuji 2007 - First podium

D Hill - Hungary 1997, the best drive of his career. To all but win in an Arrows was incredible
G Fisichella - Germany 1997, nearly won the race fair and square in an inferior Jordan, would have finshed 2nd but for a puncture
J Alesi - Italy 1994, takes pole and rockets into lead before breaking down. Symbolised his career really
N Mansell - Britain 1987, incredible comeback in front of home fans. Never has a moustache seen such power.
JM Fangio - Nurburgring 1957, the best comeback of them all and capped off a stunning career.

Id have to say hamiltons defining race was canada 2007. Fuji GP saw him do that questionable act behind the safety car causing Seb Vettel and Webber to crash into each other.

But yeah, canada 07 for Hamilton. First win and Pole position.

Alonso's defining moment Id have to say was.... well im torn between Hungary 2003, and then Suzuka 2005.

Kimis had to be Germany 2005. Summed up his close but no quite career up until 2007. but the whole 2008 season and 2009 ended his career (bar Spa 2009)

Massa and Fisichella i class as 'nearly men'. I mean massa's standout race was Brazil 2008, that will sum up his whole career. Fisichella, his second win at australi in 2005 summed his career, that was his peak, bar the underdog performance in spa 2009.

Mika Häkkinen - Jerez 1997: That long overdue first career win, after nearly dying 2 years earlier in Adelaide.
Bad luck an reliability issues hampered his 97 season, drove brilliantly all year and finally won a race.
Inspired him to achieve great things iin 98,99 and 2000.
Probably wouldn´t have won a championship had he not finished the 97 season on a high after all that drama earlier in his career.
Brilliant bloke and driver.

Also: Hamilton 2008 China, after the start at Fuji it was the same first row in Shanghai, and he absolutely was untouchable

Didier Pironi- 1982 San Marino GP. His feud with Villeneuve after this race would end up summing up his career.
Keke Rosberg- the non-championship race at Silverstone where he won in the pouring rain with a Theodore.
Pieluigi Martini-1990 USA GP: started on the front row of the grid in a Minardi, placing him in the history books.
Ivan Capelli- 1990 French GP. Second place in the Leyton House got him a drive at Ferrari 2 years later.

Lewis Hamilton 2007 one of the most dominant debut wins ive ever seen under extreme pressure with 4 safety car's.
Not many people have mentioned it i dont think Jenson Button Hungary 2006.
Michael Schumacher Spain 1996.
Vettel Monza 2008.

Raikkonen: Australia 2001. Scored points on his debut. In a Sauber.
Schumacher: Spain 1996. In the rain in a bad car he proved himself. That not only in a Benneton he could win.
Coulthard: Belgium 1998: Whenever I think of Coulthard, I think of the collsion with Schumacher.
Gilles Villeneuve: Dijon 1979 it was I believe. No words.
Jacques Villeneuve: Australia 1996. Pole, fastest lap, second place, due to an oil leak.
Fisichella: Suzuka 2005. Sums up his career. Good, steady and fast driver, but just not fast enough.

M. Schumacher: Belgium 1991-1992 (First race-First win), Australia 1994 (First WDC), Japan 2000 (3rd WDC), France 2002 (5th WDC) , Belgium 2004 (7th WDC).
Räikkönen: Monaco 2005, Australia 2007. Both races cemented him as a championship contender.
Massa: Turkey 2006 (First win), Brazil 2006 (Superstar status achieved), Brazil 2008 (World Champion for 38.9 seconds), Bahrain 2010 (He's back!).
Hamilton: Australia 2007 (First race, points, and podium), Canada 2007 (First pole and win), Japan 2007 (Spain 1996-esque mastership), China 2007 (What did I say about Spain 1996?), Brazil 2008 (He's the luckiest boy out there at the moment).
Alonso: Hungary 2003 (First win), Brazil 2005 (Does what he has to do to become WDC), China 2005 (Wins race for the team).
Button: Hungary 2006 (GET IN THERE!!! :p  ), Australia 2009 (Brawn what??!?), Brazil 2009 (WDC).
Requiescat in pace, Jules Bianchi
